Happy Fish Fact Friday! Did you know that pollock is a member of the cod family (Gadidae)? They can grow up to 3 feet long, but most run from 12 to 20 inches in length and weigh between 1 and 3 pounds. Pollock are the most abundant gadid in the North Pacific, but most of the commercial fishery off Alaska occurs on the Eastern Bering Sea shelf population. The Bogoslof Island and Aleutian Island stocks are also significant, and there are different spawning populations in the Gulf of Alaska. The annual stock assessments for each of these will be reviewed by the NPFMC Groundfish Plan Teams (GPT), for eventual consideration by the Council during their annual TAC setting process in December. She was part of the team that brought the new build through the Panama Canal, and part of the crew that’s worked tirelessly to transition our operations to the new boat. She has helped me so many times, answering questions, giving tours, participating in safety meetings, and sharing her work with guests onboard. Some updates on how the emergency donation of funds from GAPP and fishing companies helped in the emergency recovery ???? in Western Alaskan Communities after the Typhon Merbk in September 2022. Our help arrived prior to FEMA and also helped cover rebuilding things the feds don’t recognize as essential to survival in remote Alaska like fishing camps for subsistence harvesting #GAPPAM2024
