In our latest exploration of suburban intensification, we reimagined Calgary’s laneways as vibrant spaces for living, interaction, and architectural innovation. Traditional low-density, car-centric suburbs no longer meet the evolving needs of contemporary communities. Our vision transforms these underutilized spaces into dynamic and sustainable housing solutions. Through multi-computational design processes, we developed modular and customizable Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs) that break from the homogeneity of conventional suburban architecture. These adaptable living spaces integrate seamlessly with both public and private realms, fostering housing affordability, community engagement, and a more diverse urban fabric. By redefining laneways as opportunities for thoughtful design intervention, we can enhance neighborhood sustainability, revitalize historic areas, and create more inclusive, flexible cities. This project is about more than just housing—it’s about shaping a future where suburban spaces are adaptable, resilient, and designed for people. What are your thoughts on unlocking the potential of suburban laneways?
