A cactus-like building for a harsh desert climate! ???? Designed by Architekton and Grimshaw, the Rob and Melani Walton Centre for Planetary Health is a new research facility at Arizona State University in the USA. Its envelope was conceived using a biomimetic approach: it models the self-shading folds of a local cactus species to minimise solar gain. Find out more in this video! On Tuesday afternoon AIA Arizona members gathered at ASU Walton Center for Planetary Health, a high-performance research facility fostering an interdisciplinary approach to knowledge generation and leading-edge research, including innovative endeavors focusing on the sustainability of food, water and energy. Matthew Ryan, Research Project Coordinator for the ASU Center for Negative Carbon Emissions gave a presentation on Material Research: Carbon Capture, focusing on the center’s prototype technology through the use of Mechanical Trees. Attendees also heard from Rachel Green Rasmussen, AIA, principal at Architekton and 2024 president-elect of AIA Arizona, about the WCPH building process and the project’s sustainability rating as LEED Platinum.

As the summer ends, it gives me time to reflect on my summer internship at A R C H I T E K T O N! I got to work on many projects at all different scales and phases to get as much experience as possible in my short time. During the summer I got to tour job sites and completed projects with the team. I also got to attend all client and internal meetings for all my projects getting to see all steps of a project. It was a very rewarding summer! I want to give a special thank you to the team at Architekton for creating such a welcoming and positive environment to work in!

Individual tickets will go on sale in mid-August. We expect more than 400 architecture professionals from across Arizona to gather for an inspiring day. The 2024 conference is chaired by Rachel Green Rasmussen, AIA, principal at Architekton who is the 2024 president-elect of AIA Arizona. WIth the theme of Facets, the conference will inspire attendees with engaging presentations and conversations on myriad facets of our profession, from sustainable design to equity to community engagement to our future in a desert environment. A stellar lineup of featured speakers will include David Lake, FAIA, of renowned firm Lake Flato in Texas, the 2024 AIA Gold Medal recipients known for innovations in sustainability, as well Billie Tsien, AIA, the celebrated New York-based architect of Tod Williams Billie Tsien Architects who has designed the Obama Presidential Center now under construction in Chicago.
