‘Longing for Freedom’: Insights from Architect Paula Echeverri Montes ??? Welcome to Part 10 of the Firm of Her Own series, celebrating the career of architect Paula Echeverri Montes. This series honors the women in architecture who dedicate themselves to excellence and work tirelessly to make their mark. ??????? We asked Paula: What makes the time and place where you grew up special? She shared: "50 years ago, Colombia was a very interesting place. The economy and politics posed significant challenges for our nation’s development. Colombia had been under a regime called the Frente Nacional, where the two major political parties alternated power every four years for about 20 years, following an eight-year period of military rule. ???? "In many ways, society was yearning for a major shift—longing for freedom, equality, and economic growth. Women were beginning to take on important roles in government, business, and as social leaders. ????????? "My grandmother immigrated to the U.S. around 1945, at the end of World War II. She came with my grandfather, a physician who was traveling from Colombia to the U.S. for his postgraduate studies. She began working as a researcher and later graduated from Tufts University as a chemist. My mother, the third of seven children, decided to study law after my grandmother insisted she attend university. I was born in 1970. I remember my mother as an especially hard worker and a tough lawyer to face in court. ???? "I come from a long tradition of hardworking, participatory women in a country where opportunities have been fought for over the last half-century. It’s a complex country with so much potential." ???? Comment below "POTENTIAL" (or DM us) to get the full interview and become inspired by Paula’s holistic vision and free expression. ???? Could it be time for you to share your own story? ?? . . . #architects #architecture #bim #renderings #3d #ai #womenindesign #bogotaarchitecture #medellinarchitecture #urbanarchitecture #commercialdesign #colombianarchitects #design #business #mindset #success

The money is in the NO’s. ?? Consider this… when learning how to become an #AssertiveArchitect, just because only a few people out of 100 requested a chat with you initially, that does not mean NO. ?? Not by a long shot. It just means “?????? ??????.” ? That is a very important distinction. ?? So, the 85% who will eventually do a project, but say “NO” to a meeting right now, are not a “????”; they are a ??????, but just not yet. ? This is a LOT of clients, projects, and fees sitting on your ????????????’?? ???????? list. ???? Better still, most of these people won’t have a preferred architect yet either (too early). ??? ?????? ?????????? ????: if we stay in touch, stay top of mind, add value, and become their coach and educator over the next two years… more will eventually succumb to your charm and get to the point where they say, “Hey Martha, I think we are ready to talk to that architect who keeps emailing us every month — do you have her phone number?” ?? When communicating in your content, follow this process: 1?? Tell a great story. ?? 2?? Explain how the story is a metaphor for their project. ?? 3?? Instruct them on what to do next. ?? #ArchitectTips #StayPersistent #ClientBuilding #ArchitectLife #Marketing

The 700-foot campanile-style Metropolitan Life Tower, the loftiest habitable structure in the world in 1909, was pre-fabricated and hoisted into position With its slender shaft, high-pitched roof and lantern, the tower of the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company evokes the famed bell-tower of San Marco in Venice. First planned to be 658 feet, the final height stretched to 700 feet. Sheathed in white Tuckahoe Marble, the tower rises above Madison Square at 23rd Street and Madison Avenue where at night the "light that never fails" glows from its lantern, flashing the hour and quarter-hour. What is long forgotten is that the tower was assembled in New Jersey, then floated across the Hudson where it was carefully placed onto a line of padded, wheeled flatbeds. A team of 200 of New York’s Finest parade horses were ganged together and the empty tower was slowly dragged down 42nd Street to Broadway, base first, into Madison Square, the top half of which had been previously shorn of trees and other impedimenta. When the base of the tower reached 24th Street, the tip of the spire reached 27th Street. The horses were then detached and connected instead to a huge derrick hoist, whose rope was tied around the tower approximately one third of the way up. When all was secure, a starter’s pistol was fired and the horses jerked forward as one causing the recumbent tower to pop up. Hydraulic jacks were then used to jimmy the tower into its final position atop the existing 11-story base structure. This Vedic #architect was raised under the stars and the spell of storytelling. Born and raised in India, Aparna Patil recalls a childhood vastly different from the American experience. She grew up just down the road from her parents and two younger brothers, living with her grandparents who gifted her fantastical books, sleepovers on the terrace, and a deep reverence for nature. Her respect for both natural and designed spaces is rooted in this childhood, where she learned to value every item in her life and home. Once sleeping beneath the moonlight, Aparna was awakened by the sun. Intrigued by the divinity in Eastern-style spaces, she pursued the necessary #architectureexams and freelance jobs, eventually starting her own firm—a Firm of Her Own—in 2016. Being a female architect has shaped her professional relationships. While she experienced balanced male-female dynamics in India, construction remains ‘the domain of men,’ both there and in the U.S. The labor force in the U.S. differs from what she knew in India, and Aparna found herself needing to assert her authority in drawing sketches and moving projects forward. When she began working with NBJ, she often dressed in dark colors. Now, she proudly wears Indian-style attire and a bindi to meetings. “I greet with ‘#namaste.’ I stand out. I have a lot to learn, and a lot to offer. Vedic architecture is ancient, thousands of years old. But the principles are ageless. I want to adapt them and make them part of our lives today,” she says. Aparna Patil is a pioneer of #VedicArchitecture for modern lifestyles, spreading calm and beauty to her clients. She believes it’s her responsibility to orient homes wisely to the passing of the sun, ensuring that time is marked by story and light. Ready to take your next step toward joining a community where you can share your knowledge, learn from others, and land better projects? ?? DM us "NAMASTE" to get the link to the full interview where she joins the ranks of female architects in the Firm of Her Own blog series this #WomensHistoryMonth. Aparna, thank you for sharing your wisdom and the road to your destiny.
