  • In honor of the late President Jimmy Carter on National Day of Mourning, let's reflect on some of the great strides that were accomplished during his time in office. 1977: Dept. of Energy is created to reduce U.S. dependence on foreign oil. 1978: National Energy Act was pushed which cut travel costs and boosted competition. 1978: Mediated talks between Israel and Egypt, resulting in a peace treaty between the two nations. 1979: Dept. of Education is created to promote educational excellence and student achievement in the U.S. Additionally, President Carter's post-presidential life included working with charitable causes such as Habitat for Humanity International, a global organization that works to provide housing for underprivileged people.   • The Social Security Fairness Act has been signed into law by President Biden. This act eliminates the Windfall Elimination Program (WEP) and Government Pension Offset (GPO), which previously caused reductions in Social Security payments to individual public-sector workers and their spouses. What does this mean? Upon implementation, many retired workers and their spouses with public pensions shall no longer have their Social Security benefits reduced from work not covered by Social Security. Think this affects you? Here's what to do: If you have previously filed for Social Security benefits, you DO NOT need to take action now EXCEPT to make sure that the agency has your current mailing address and direct deposit information if your address has recently changed.
