? Decisiveness, passion, intuition ? ??The keys to success according to this year’s Arch Grants Entrepreneur Awardee As always, the 2024 Arch Grants gala was a great night. Usually my favorite part is connecting with people from so many corners of the STL business community in one space. And we did definitely that—Bold Xchange even had a booth where we did live demos ?? But this year’s program really spoke to me. Some particularly salient gems (all scribbled hastily in my program book ??): ??If you’re right more than you’re wrong—even just 51%—you’ll be successful. ??There’s a ruthlessness in business. It roots out complacency. ??In a company that’s trying to change things every day, some people will get left behind. ??Be selective about where you apply your craft—work for customers who pay you on time and treat you with the golden rule. “If not, screw em.” (that’s a direct quote from honoree Bob Clark ??) Huge shoutout to Gabe Angieri and the entire team at Arch Grants for pulling off yet another great event. Kudos to Pierre Paul who emceed and even installed his company We Hear You, Inc’s Hero Door Opener in the venue ?? Congratulations to all of the Arch Grants recipients, present and future, who will be the future CIVIC leaders STL so desperately needs right now! 40 years ago I started Clayco, but something sparked me 42 years ago that I shared with the audience last week. I was in my first company selling equipment. I was having great success, but woke up one day and realized I was miserable and not passionate about my job. So, I was decisive and QUIT. Entrepreneurs need to be DECISIVE. Making decisions and acting on intuition is critical. PASSION and empathy are critical to your own care and how to solve your clients’ problems in a critical way. CLIENTS can see your love of solving the problem. There are three key things I shared during my speech and that are vital to success: ·??Hire the best and brightest. ·??Follow the Golden Rule. ·??Be selective about where you apply your craft and work with customers you trust and that have your same values. While you must have a deep sense of compassion for people, you also have to ruthlessly root out complacency, people in your organization who are not as passionate as you are, and people who get arrogant. Business is hard! When your company is innovative, ambitious, and growing, you will leave some people behind. Remember that they will find their way and be fine. AND, you will be FINER!
