I hope that you enjoy part 3 of answering “what is classical education?” through some loosely related ideas: Classical education views the purpose of education as the transmission from one generation to the next of timeless truths about ourselves and the universe, of essential wisdom about living a happy, purposeful life, and of our rich cultural heritage, which we ourselves have a responsibility to uphold, safeguard, and transmit as citizens. Mortimer Adler in his How to Read a Book gives great insight into this process. He states that to increase our understanding we must read things that we cannot readily comprehend. Then, through a process in which the mind works in concert with the symbols of the material, it “elevates itself by the power of its own operations.” This is quite different than reading for information which, “may increase our store of information but cannot improve our understanding, for our understanding was equal to the material before we started.” Classical education distinguishes between learning—which involves understanding more through the faculties of reason, discussion, and intellect—and simply remembering more information, which engages only the memory. This process of gaining wisdom is one miracle of human beings. One that many of us fail to trust, whether we are educating others or seeking education ourselves. The process is also very challenging, akin to mental weightlifting— which is why seminars are such an important aspect of this kind of learning. But more on that in another post! To tie it all together, classical education seeks to propagate wisdom. However, this wisdom can only be propagated if the students themselves become wise; otherwise, we give them gifts they cannot themselves use, teaching them to speak a foreign language they do not understand.

As I mentioned last week, answering the question, "what is classical education?" is no small task. I am offering a few ideas here as food for thought. Classical education strives to aim at the highest things, recognizing that there is a hierarchy of goods in a life well-lived. By aiming at cultivating moral and intellectual virtue, fostering sense of wonder about that which is True, Good and Beautiful, and developing skills & habits necessary for lifelong learning, it orients young souls toward the Good Life; consequently, it also hits things like college readiness and career success. When education only aims at preparing people for college, careers, and engagement in partisan politics, it often fails to hit that mark. Sadly, even when it succeeds, it neglects the noble things that make up a full, happy life. I think we can see the absence of an orientation to these higher goods in our society today. Classical education wants to bring that back for the sake of our children and our country.

Since starting as a teacher in Classical education, helping to shepherd families through it, and now supporting the broader movement, I am constantly asked, "What is it?" I think the best way to answer that question would be through a Platonic dialogue, but in lieu of that, I'll try to share a few different ideas. If they're good, they will likely just raise more questions! Here's the first: The goal of Classical education is to expand the aperture of our intellect and imagination so that we can behold reality, rather than deconstructing it through the narrow aperture of our intellect and imagination.
