Today marks the 25th anniversary of the U.S. Supreme Court's landmark decision in Olmstead v. L.C. This pivotal case, involving Lois Curtis (pictured here!) and Elaine Wilson, opened doors for millions of people with disabilities to live in their communities instead of being confined to institutions. Lois and Elaine, who both had intellectual disabilities and mental health conditions, fought tirelessly for their right to live at home instead of in Georgia’s mental health hospitals. On June 22, 1999, the Supreme Court ruled that the Americans With Disabilities Act prohibits such segregation and mandates states to provide community-based services when possible. The Arc played a crucial role in this case, contributing to an amicus brief and collaborating with state Attorneys General to support community living. While this ruling has enabled generations to live, work, and learn in the setting of their choosing, our work is far from over. Read our blog to learn more ?? https://lnkd.in/eMU8eCNJ

Voting should be accessible to ALL, regardless of disability or racial background! This includes access to: ?? Online and mail-in ballot options ??? Ballots in different languages ?? Polling places with ramps, rails, and other accessibility features ?? Tools like electronic voting machines with audio/visual aids ?? An assistor of the voter’s choice In the last four years, states have passed more than 400 anti-voter measures. Many voter suppression laws affect people of color and voters with disabilities the most. They restrict access to absentee voting. They make it more difficult to vote early in person. And they make it illegal to help people with disabilities vote. We must ensure EVERYONE has equal access to exercise their right to vote! #TheArcVotes #DisabilityVote #Election2024
