Arizona is facing historically high temperatures and prolonged dry conditions, heightening the risk of wildfires. Across the state, we have 20 crews supporting Arizona Public Service - APS Forestry and Fire Mitigation- trimming trees along powerlines, clearing brush beneath transmission corridors, and creating 10-foot defensible spaces around poles to eliminate ignition fuels. This proactive work has been proven to reduce wildfire risk and protect infrastructure and communities. This is demanding work, especially in the desert heat. This recent project along Sage Canyon Road in Napa County is a great example of the type of roadside fuels reduction work that #CALFIRE and our partners do across the state. By reducing the volume of vegetation along roadways we reduce the likelihood of wildfire ignitions from sparks and heat from poorly maintained vehicles or dragging chains. Clearing vegetation from roadsides also improves egress by reducing fire hazards and ensuring unobstructed access for emergency vehicles and evacuating residents. See how the Napa County and Napa Firewise is tackling wildfire risk! This California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE) Sonoma-Lake-Napa Unit video showcases our roadside clearing project on Sage Canyon Road. It has been a pleasure working with ArborWorks, LLC, our hired vendor for this project. But this is just one piece of the puzzle: we're implementing nearly 40 miles of roadside fuel treatment across the county.
