Advances in investigative genetic genealogy enable the identification of human remains more precisely than ever. Through the analysis of DNA samples from unidentified remains and comparison with genetic databases, information about an individual's ancestry, physical traits, and potential relatives can now be revealed. This groundbreaking technology, featured in a publication earlier this year, is transforming the approach to human remains identification and is bringing closure to families searching for their missing loved ones. In this study, the myBaits human whole-genome enrichment kit was utilized to enrich the human DNA portion of samples. Did you know that hybridization plays a crucial role in creating biodiversity and enhancing the attributes of crops? Utilizing in vitro gamete fusion Maryenti et al. successfully overcame the hybridization barrier between two different subfamilies wheat and rice. This technique produced allopolyploid wheat-rice hybrid zygotes, which developed into mature plants. These hybrid plants possessed a ‘wheat nuclear genome’ + ‘wheat/rice cytoplasmic’ genome.? The study explored the genomic sequences and compositions of the hybrids using both short- and long-read sequencing analysis. Furthermore, the team utilized myTags? FISH probes to investigate the wheat and rice mitochondrial genome (mtDNA) profile in the hybrids. This investigation led to the detection of rice or wheat mitochondria as well as mitochondria with merged signals, suggesting a possible fusion between the rice and wheat mitochondria. These findings supported the results from genome sequencing, indicating the potential insertion of rice mtDNA region into the wheat mitochondrial genome.
