As surprising as it may sound, the idea that philanthropy should stay away from policy and advocacy persists in many corners of the field. That's a missed opportunity. Check out this new blog from Andrew Peters about why funders have a responsibility to fund policy and advocacy work, along with tips on how to begin or deepen their practice. https://lnkd.in/ggPEwT2U

In recent years, LGBTQ organizations in the South have seen larger declines in funding than any other region in the country. In the face of this disparity, organizations like the Campaign For Southern Equality(CSE) are working to protect the rights and wellbeing of LGBTQ individuals in a region historically overlooked by the philanthropic community. CSE’s work centers around promoting gender-affirming care, advocating for inclusive school policies, and conducting research to inform their initiatives. One such program is the Southern Trans Youth Emergency Project (STYEP), which aims to provide immediate resources and support to the families of transgender youth facing barriers to health care, which has already impacted the lives of more than 1,000 families and moved more than $500,000 directly to these families. Our colleague Joseph Brooks recently sat down with Allison Scott, interim executive director, to discuss the urgency of protecting these rights and the best ways for philanthropy to get involved. This year’s Grantmakers In Health Annual Conference on Health Philanthropy provided the opportunity to engage with thought leaders in health philanthropy on a range of topics, from youth mental health to the role of housing in health equity. In this Q+A, Joseph Brooks connects with Allison Scott, the interim executive director of the Campaign For Southern Equality(CSE) and a panelist at the conference. Their conversation touches on what CSE is doing to safeguard the rights of the LGBTQ community and why funders should consider expanding their giving to the US South.
