I would like to thank the Young Aquaculture Society for supporting my participation at The Fish Veterinary Society 2025 Spring Scientific Meeting. It was a pleasure to share a short overview of my research during my time as a PhD student at the University of Stirling. I'm very much looking forward to reading 'What a fish knows' by Johnathon Balcombe. Attending the conference offered invaluable insights into the diverse initiatives aimed at enhancing fish health and welfare within the sector. The opportunity to gain perspectives from experts working with species outside my usual scope was truly enlightening. It was a also a great opportunity to catch up with fellow YAS members in-person, and to connect with professionals whose contributions to science I've followed eagerly. Thanks to James Sibley for the picture.

  • On November 12th, I had the privilege of presenting to a group from Fisheries Management Scotland on identifying and managing parasites in wild fish populations. The session focused on: Finding & Identifying Parasites Post-Mortem Examinations Importance of Legislation Sample Collection & Storage This educational effort aims to raise awareness among fish health professionals, farm managers, and others involved in fish health. By sharing techniques and insights, we work together to enhance fish welfare and tackle health issues from the ground up. This effort builds on recent research, such as Brewster's study on UK freshwater parasites and Urquhart's survey on wild sea trout parasites in Scotland. These studies highlight the complex dynamics of parasite-host relationships and underscore the importance of monitoring parasites to protect fish health. By sharing practical techniques and the latest findings, we’re working together to enhance fish welfare and equip professionals on the front lines of fish care. #FishHealth #AquaticVets #FishParasites #WildSalmon #Aquaculture #FishVeterinarian

  • Fantastic to be a small part of delivering this wild fish health workshop held in the superb new facilities at the Rural and Veterinary Innovation Centre (RAVIC) on the Inverness Campus. Thanks to Fisheries Management Scotland and fellow fish vets Chris Matthews, Alison Brough, and Ronnie Soutar of Fish Veterinary Society. RAVIC is a major asset to the veterinary and animal health world in the north- exciting to now be able to put on a workshop of this quality right here in the capital of the Highlands.

The laboratory facilities at the Rural and Veterinary Innovation Centre (RAVIC) are world class and available for hire to both the public and private sectors. They have been put to full use this week by Fisheries Management Scotland and the Fish Veterinary Society. Their wild fish health workshop for fisheries managers was addressed by Scotland's Chief Veterinary Officer Sheila Voas who was also able to sample our lab facilities.

  • Proud to have had the opportunity to present at WVEPAH, diving deep into essential topics for advancing veterinary care. From treatment strategies to vaccination protocols and navigating the veterinary cascade, these sessions were all about bridging the gap between day-one competence and real-world practice. It's always rewarding to share knowledge that can help improve animal health and ensure compliance with the latest regulations. Grateful for the chance to contribute to our profession's continued growth!?#Fishvet #AnimalHealth #WVEPAH #ContinuousLearning

In-Depth Presentations at WVEPAH: Beyond Day-One Competence I had the privilege of delivering four comprehensive presentations at WVEPAH, focusing on critical areas that go beyond day-one competence in veterinary practice. These sessions covered treatment strategies, prescribing protocols, and a thorough exploration of the veterinary cascade. We also delved into vaccination protocols, effective vaccination strategies, and the often-complex registration process for vaccines. A key aspect of the presentations was understanding how to apply these treatments and vaccination strategies in the field, ensuring they align with real-world challenges and regulations. We discussed the importance of the vaccine registration process and its direct implications for prescribing, especially under the cascade system, which is vital for ensuring safe and effective animal care. These detailed presentations aimed to equip veterinary professionals with both the technical knowledge and practical tools necessary to navigate these areas, providing better animal health outcomes and compliance with regulatory standards.? • WVEPAH Aquaculture Course in Padova – A Day of Hands-On Learning and Lively Discussion It was a pleasure to lecture at the WVEPAH Aquaculture course in Padova, where we combined theoretical knowledge with practical fieldwork. The course included a site visit to a local fish farm, offering participants an invaluable opportunity to engage directly with the farmer, ask questions, and gain real-world insights into the industry. During the visit, we conducted a clinical review of the farm setup, assessing the health of the fish based on clinical signs observed during our walkthrough. This hands-on experience allowed attendees to apply their veterinary knowledge in a real-world scenario. The afternoon session was dedicated to reviewing the findings from our visit. What followed was a lively and dynamic discussion, where we not only challenged the advice presented but also explored how it might be received by the farmer. The conversation shifted toward strategies for engaging with farmers, emphasizing the importance of communication to ensure that recommendations are both practical and beneficial in improving animal health and welfare. The day highlighted the complexity of veterinary practice in aquaculture, where balancing scientific expertise with the farmer’s perspective is crucial for achieving meaningful improvements. Looking forward to more opportunities to collaborate and innovate in the field! Managing Director, owner at Aquatic Vets ltd

Today i am at the #britishveterinaryassociation council meeting and members day #BVADay. People may know i am the past president for the #fishveterinarysociety and current president for #wavma. Knowledge amongst vets about fish is still very limited and the knowledge that is known is often out of date or based on sensational facts distributed through social media which are not representing the current status fish medicine and fish welfare. This is both the case for aquaculture and ornamental fish. Campaigning for the increase in the understanding about fish is a passion on mine and the reason for taking on all these voluntary roles. It allows for great interaction with people of all professions and leaving them a little bit wiser than before. It also challenge the fish world to discuss and look for improvements. Something that is done already as aquaculture and ornamentals are a great adopter of new technologies and particular in aquaculture there is a big scientific community researching all aspects, making improvements when they go along

Emeritus Professor of Aquaculture Nutrition at Harper Adams University

I was most sad to hear of the recent passing of Professor Ronald (Ron) J Roberts, aged 83, founder and first Director of the Institute of Aquaculture, University of Stirling, Scotland. Ron was a most famous fish pathologist and distinguished veterinarian with a global reputation. He supported me so well during my doctoral research program from 1980 to 1984 and I have the fondest memories of my time at the Institute under his leadership. He created a unique environment for generations of students, both masters and PhDs and scientists now alumni of his beloved Institute. He was well liked and respected throughout the world and was a prolific author such as his textbook ‘Fish Pathology’ and many more. He produced numerous excellent scientific papers and reports for industry. He was instrumental in advising the Scottish ?????????????? government on Atlantic salmon production and disease prevention strategies. He was honoured by the late King of Thailand for his services to SE Asia. The Institute was granted the Queen’s Award for Enterprise for its innovation and excellence! One of his proudest achievements along with the visit of the late Diana Princess of Wales to open the tilapia unit. He leaves a fantastic legacy. My sincere condolences to his family and many friends. Thank you Ron, you are missed indeed.
