Creating a better future for aquatic animals. 501(c)(3) and CAF International Verified.

关于我们

ALI was founded to expedite, support, and direct the nascent aquatic animal welfare movement. We seek to create the largest change for the largest numbers in the shortest time. Our work is motivated by the understanding that approximately 200 billion aquatic animals are killed by humans every single day and our success can mean a truly tremendous reduction in suffering.

  • We’re urging the UN to recognize aquatic animal welfare in their ocean governance. Join us in this critical movement! ???? The Zero Draft Declaration, titled "Our Ocean, Our Future: Accelerating Action", serves as the foundation for international negotiations leading up to the Third United Nations Ocean Conference (UNOC3), to be held in June 2025. We at ALI have submitted comments to the Zero Draft Declaration that urge the UN to integrate humane fishing and aquaculture principles for a more holistic ocean governance framework. Our submission highlights the massive scale of aquatic animal suffering—2-3 trillion animals annually caught in the wild for human consumption—and the lack of animal welfare protections in current ocean conservation policies. We propose specific language changes to ensure that marine conservation, fisheries, and aquaculture policies recognize and integrate aquatic animal welfare principles. Find our full submission here: https://lnkd.in/eStVeUBM

  • Aquatic Life Institute has published our first-ever welfare guide specifically targeting tuna. Based on the intersections of welfare, product quality, and food safety, the guide shares distinct, actionable recommendations for companies to consider when incorporating welfare policies for tuna. It also provides examples of companies that are taking initiative in this area already, with an aim to inspire others to meet the same standards and join the growing industry-wide shift toward humane fishing. Because tuna welfare in fisheries has historically been a heavily neglected topic, these policies have the potential to catalyze change in a multi-billion dollar industry. • Vote for ALI in Project for Awesome to help us win funding for aquatic animal welfare! We have an exciting opportunity to make a significant impact on aquatic animal welfare, and we need?your support?to make it happen! ALI has entered the?Project for Awesome?election, and we’re asking for your vote to help us secure funding that will allow us to continue our critical work in advocating for the rights of aquatic animals. Why Vote for ALI? By voting for ALI, you’re helping us bring much-needed attention to the?forgotten billions—the fish, octopuses, and crustaceans who suffer silently in our food systems.?Aquatic animals?are often overlooked, but they are sentient beings who deserve protection from the cruelty they endure in industrial fishing and aquaculture. This funding will help us: - Shine a light?on the suffering of aquatic animals, from the farms to the fisheries, and show why they deserve the same consideration as other animals in the food system. - Ban inhumane practices?and prevent the expansion of cruel industries like?farmed octopus, which have no place in our sustainable food future. - Drive global policy change, advocating for the rights of aquatic animals and?challenging industry norms?to create a food system that respects all living beings, while also being more?sustainable and ethical. How to Vote: - Find our video here and vote:?https://lnkd.in/eN2WKtq4 - Spread the word to your friends and networks to help us?maximize our impact! Thank you for being part of our journey. Let’s make this happen!

  • ????Sign the petition to ask the UN Ocean Conference to adopt the?six action points?of OceanCare: ??Ban offshore oil and gas exploration and phase out fossil fuels ??Mandatory measures to reduce vessel speed ??Ban destructive fisheries such as bottom trawling ??Global rules to end plastic pollution addressing the full life cycle of plastic ??Agree on a global moratorium on deep-sea mining ??Effective conservation measures to protect and restore marine ecosystems https://lnkd.in/eGYPkGp5

  • ?? Exciting progress in the campaign to #BanOctopusFarming! Oregon House Bill 2557 has officially been filed by Rep. Zach Hudson! ??This bill would make it illegal to farm octopuses for human consumption or to take part in the sale of octopus that was raised for human consumption. Since the start of 2024, we’ve been engaging with Oregon legislators to voice our concerns, and we’re thrilled to see another state stepping up to protect these intelligent, sentient animals. A shoutout to Animal Rights Initiative for their incredible lobbying efforts for this bill and several others. • ?We're thrilled that the Washington State Board of Natural Resources has officially banned net pens, outlawing open-water #salmon farms in state-managed waterways. Net pens - large open-water cages used to raise finfish like salmon - are notorious for causing environmental damage. Fish escapes, antibiotic use, introduction of pathogens to marine environments, and phytoplankton blooms are just a few of the issues related to net pen #aquaculture. At Aquatic Life Institute, we champion the shift away from inhumane, unsustainable aquaculture practices and towards #ethical, #sustainable solutions that benefit animals, the planet, and people.?? https://lnkd.in/eUj-6vnw
