The majority of Turkish aquaculture production is made up of two fish species, seabass and seabream. In fact, Türkiye has become the world’s biggest producer and exporter of these two species. More recently, aquaculture producers have started raising Turkish salmon, which is a variety of rainbow trout (???????????????????????? ????????????) that very closely resembles Atlantic salmon. Over the last couple decades, as the volumes of sea-caught fish has declined, Türkiye has ramped up its aquaculture industry. Italy uses a range of aquaculture systems (off-bottom, floating cages, tanks, etc.), which shows adaptability. ?? The dominance of off-bottom methods in brackish and marine waters suggests practices that could have less direct physical impact on marine habitats compared to bottom trawling or destructive fishing. However, the 69.7% concentration in marine and brackish aquaculture could pose risks to ecosystems, including eutrophication and habitat degradation, if not managed carefully. Floating cages, which account for 10% of production, can lead to nutrient leakage and water quality challenges. The employment of 4,488 people shows that aquaculture provides jobs and economic opportunities in rural and coastal areas, contributing to decent livelihoods while making use of natural resources. However, the employment figure (4,488 people in 2017) appears low and outdated compared to the scale of operations in 2021. ??? Modernisation of systems may reduce the need for labour, posing a risk to employment unless retraining or alternative employment opportunities are available.
