#FrictionReducers (FR) have long been a critical component of hydraulically fracturing unconventional shale wells. Formulations for friction reducer additives usually contain polyacrylamide, a water-soluble polymer that reduces friction and boosts the viscosity of the hydraulic fluid. By adding FR, the #hydraulicfracturing fluid overcomes the pressures losses that come from pumping large volumes of frac fluid at high rates and also ensure that the proppant remains suspended and evenly distributed within the fluid. While liquid FR additives were once the norm, dry FR has become the preferred chemical state for the product due to reduced cost and easier storage/shipment. However, it was found that legacy equipment was not ideal for pumping dry FR as part of a stimulation treatment. Unlike other dry additives (like guar), polymeric friction reducer just dumped in #fracfluid will cause clumping behavior that can clog pumps as well as the blender, disrupting the #frackingprocess and resulting in non-productive time. To correct for this, the majority of dry FR vendors provide specialty units that engage in a high-energy mixing process prior to the friction reducer being pulled to the blender. Though largely effective, this process is still fraught with complications, can consume significant rig site space, and may not sufficiently disperse or hydrate the friction reducer. In this forum, one innovator will present a unique #FRdeliverysystem where proppant is coated on-site with a thin layer of dry FR-- a process, they argue, that results in better FR delivery while still being economical, effective, efficient, and environmentally-focused. One of our dedicated team members at AquaSmart was on his way to a Panola County pad recently for his shift and shared this picture, highlighting the challenge of navigating a main road submerged in water! ???? Despite the weather, our PropCoater has impressively coated nearly 100 million pounds of sand the last month, even during one of the wettest months we've seen in a long time in the Haynesville! ?????
