??? AQUARIUS recognizes the need for a source-to-sea approach to tackle the challenges facing our interconnected aquatic ecosystems.?? ?? This is why we are integrating and providing access to both marine and freshwater research infrastructures to enable collaborative transnational research and innovation that delivers solutions to these challenges. ?? Our coordinator Aodhán Fitzgerald joined the discussions at the European Ocean Days to see how these solutions will strengthen water resilience across Europe. ??? This afternoon, Aodhán is participating in the European Blue Parks Community Workshops to discuss collaboration on marine protection and restoration and the effective management of Marine Protected Areas. ?? Reaching our ambitious targets to protect 30% and strictly protecting 10% of EU sea areas by 2030 can only be achieved by sharing our combined EU resources and knowledge. ??? During the AQUARIUS General Assembly in Helsinki last week we had the chance to visit RV Aranda! ??? Managed by Finnish Environment Institute (Syke) - Suomen ymp?rist?keskus (Syke), RV Aranda is designed for marine research, biological, physical, hydrographic, geophysical and geotechnical surveys and it has sailed for these purposes in several seas, visiting both the Arctic and Antarctic regions. ??? On board the vessel, we had the opportunity to speak with scientists and crew who told us stories of their expeditions in the Baltic and showed us the equipment they use to take water samples from 3km deep where the pressure is about 300 times higher than at sea level. ?? We also saw one of the gliders operated by The Finnish Meteorological Institute - Ilmatieteen laitos. These gliders traverse pre-programmed routes, collecting data on temperature, salinity, oxygen levels, chlorophyll concentration, turbidity, and colored dissolved organic matter (CDOM). ?? Both these research infrastructures play crucial roles in understanding the Baltic Sea ecosystem. Learn more about them and apply for access when our next call opens in September! ?? ?? Yesterday was a productive and exciting day at the AQUARIUS General Assembly! ? We discussed the significant progress to date, with all the activities and outputs planned for year one, achieved. ?? We learned about the outcomes of our successful first Transnational Access Calls, and the next steps in the evaluation process. ?? We discussed the next steps for the project and the next AQUARIUS Transnational Access Call launching in September 2025. ??We explored the Transnational Access Platform (TAP) from the perspective of evaluators, experts, and infrastructure managers. ?? After an intense first year of activities, the first in-person AQUARIUS General Assembly is taking place in Finland, Helsinki, with thanks to our local host partner, Finnish Environment Institute (Syke) - Suomen ymp?rist?keskus (Syke). ??? This morning, AQUARIUS partners received a warm welcome from Jukka Sepp?l? (SYKE) where we learned some “cool” and “hot” facts about Finland!? Our coordinator, Aodhán F. then took the floor, thanking partners for all the hard work in the past year and extending thanks also to the wider research community for the excellent response to our first Transnational Access Call! ?? What's on today’s agenda???♀? ?? We start with a plenary meeting where all work packages will update the consortium on their progress, project milestones and next steps. ?? We will then continue to more in depth discussions of the work activities, focusing in particular today on the core work of AQUARIUS - providing transnational access to the AQUARIUS research infrastructure portfolio. ?? Finally, this afternoon we will have an opportunity to visit one of the research vessels in our catalogue, with a tour of the RV Aranda! ??
