We are excited to announce that The Aquaponics Association submitted a NAICS Proposal for Change to be reviewed for the FY27 #NAICS code updates! This is a major development for the #aquaponics industry as if this proposal is accepted, it will likely result in the aquaponics industry receiving it's very own NAICS code! You may be asking yourself, what the heck even is a NAICS code? Well NAICS stands for North American Industry Classification System. Essentially, the NAICS code identifies what type of business you are based on your activities, which is a unique classification system used by Mexico, Canada, and the US. Every business is assigned a code which enables the tracking of the economic activities, impacts, and more for that specific industry in North America! Up to this point, the aquaponics industry has never had a specific code, rather aquaponic businesses would operate as either an aquaculture, under-cover production (i.e. Greenhouse), or another type of business. Therefore, if our proposal is accepted it would mark a significant milestone in our mission to secure legislative recognition for the aquaponics industry to be classified as a distinct and essential part of agriculture in North America. This achievement would would not have been possible without the dedication and expertise of our NAICS Proposal Development Committee.
