    This year has been instrumental in addressing PFAS, with federal and state authorities taking significant steps to protect public health and the environment. ?? Key milestones: ?? The first-ever legally enforceable drinking water standards and Maximum Contaminant Levels (MCLs) for PFAS were established. ?? PFOA and PFOS were designated as hazardous substances under CERCLA, ensuring stricter cleanup efforts and mandatory reporting of leaks and spills. ?? The EPA is investing billions of dollars through President Biden’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law to remove PFAS and other emerging contaminants from water. ?? The FDA took action to eliminate PFAS from food packaging, reducing exposure through consumer goods. ??     I've seen recent news articles using the “forever chemicals" language in expounding emerging technologies that deatroy PFAS, stating that these technologies are the first to destroy them. There are a lot of great technologies being scaled up, but we've known that PFAS can be destroyed for a while. This raises questions on the accuracy and usefulness of the “forever chemical” narrative. Whether PFAS are really "forever" depends on your specific question: ?? 1. Do they last forever in the world, like there’s no way to make them go away? No. There are demonstrated ways to destroy PFAS and turn them into not-PFAS. The most widespread of these is simply to burn them at very high temperatures (typically around 1,000 degrees C but can happen lower under certain conditions). This isn't easy, because that’s super hot. There’s only about 20 incinerators in the US that get that hot. I feel like the clean cycle in my oven is pretty toasty and that’s about 470 degrees C. There are also other technologies that can destroy PFAS at lower temperatures or ever room temperature by adding other types of energy like chemicals, electricity, and pressure. Many of these are actively developing into full-scale technologies, and they have cool names that sound like they belong on a sci-fi TV show. Some examples include: -supercritical water oxidation (hot and pressurized) -hydrothermal alkaline treatment (hot, pressurized, and alkaline - i.e. the opposite of acidic or high pH) -electrochemical oxidation (room temp, with chemicals and electricity) -non-thermal plasma (room temp, with lots of electricity) -advanced reduction or oxidation processes (room temp, with chemicals and fancy lamps) ?? 2. Do they last forever in people’s bodies? No. Like many chemicals we use, some PFAS can accumulate in people’s bodies. But they don’t stay there forever. They generally stay around for around a decade. And they generally hang out in a.) your blood and b.) your muscles while they are checked into the you-hotel. This doesn’t mean the just PFAS disappear from your blood - they probably go out in you pee and ultimately end up in a local river. And if your body is constantly taking in more PFAS, the level in your body might not actually change. ?? 3. Do they last forever in the environment without human intervention? Probably. Lots of people have studied PFAS in the environment and while many change into other PFAS, no one has observed PFAS turning into not-PFAS under natural conditions. There is some hope that bacteria will evolve a way to destroy them naturally, but it hasn’t been seen yet and doesn’t look likely based on how strong the carbon-fluorine bond is. This lasting-forever-in-the-environment thing, also called "persistence," is the most problematic thing about PFAS. It means that any PFAS we make and release keep building up in the environment. They don't "go away" unless we engineer them away, and that's really expensive.

    Another HUGE win against PFAS (forever chemical) contamination ?? One to be used alongside other nature-based solutions such as the one(s) pioneered by Elena Doms and her company. For the past 20 to 30 years, there was no tool capable of destroying PFAS - the so-called “forever chemicals.” Although contrary to the headline it seems more like a reduction than destruction ?? However, Tacoma, WA, startup, Aquagga Inc., created an effective PFAS-destroying prototype named “Eleanor.” Its size is relatively compact, and the unit is housed inside a 10-feet-long by 8-feet-wide shipping container. Aquagga's device uses a process called hydrothermal liquefaction to convert PFAS from wastewater into harmless substances. Wastewater is often used in many countries for irrigation and feeding livestock. This is how PFAS ends up back in our food and contaminates everyone. The device was tested in Alaska, at a lined underground pit containing 20,000 gallons of water contaminated with firefighting foam high in PFAS. Eleanor managed to reduce the foamy toxic water to 1,000 gallons - effectively purifying the rest. The technology achieves up to 99.99% PFAS destruction without creating toxic byproducts.
