  • ? MONDAY'S WEBINAR ~ Bridging the gap: How can we more effectively integrate research and practice? Don't miss this exciting webinar, hosted by the APT Preservation Engineering Technical Committee (PETC), featuring a researcher and a practicing engineer as they discuss how research and practice can help each other. This session will focus on load-bearing masonry systems. First, we will look at assumptions engineers make in assessment of assemblies, what experimental test results demonstrate and some simplified modelling strategies to represent complex systems. Discussion will look at how research is looking progressively more at holistic approaches in assessment, particularly where seismic hazards exist, and some of the surprising displacement capacities found in existing walls. The session will be rounded out with a look at some ‘out of the box’ intervention ideas being tested in the search for low-cost holistic retrofit solutions. ??? • We have another exciting #APTMember update to share. APT members Ronald Staley, FAPT, APT RP, Rob Yallop, and Austin Giesey 's book, Ruin to Revival, Restoring Michigan Central Station: The Builders’ Journey, is *finally* back in stock and available for orders (it's been out of stock for several weeks). They describe detailed restoration of eight acres of historic masonry surfaces, constrained by seasonal weather limitations, safe sequence of work, and restoration of one of the largest Guastavino vaults. From reopening the original limestone quarry to using 3D printing for lost ornamentation, this is a unique capture of the construction process seldom documented in the industry. Congratulations to our fellow APT members. And if you're interested in getting a copy, order it quickly before it's out of stock again. #historicpreservation #MichiganCentralStation

  • It's another APT #MemberMonday! Passive House Accelerator published an article by APT Member Nakita Reed, AIA, CPHC, LEED AP BD+C, NOMA, titled “Building Reuse is Climate Action.” The piece argues that historic preservation and environmental sustainability are two sides of the same coin—both seeking to equitably meet present needs while retaining precious resources for future generations. The piece can be accessed at https://lnkd.in/grvwzuBY. #buildingReuse #ClimateChange #historicpreservation Quinn Evans

  • APT’s Executive Director Greg Galer recently took a highly informative tour with The Christman Company team, including Tom Whitmore, Vice President of Historic Preservation, and Bernie O’Brien, Assistant Project Manager, of their large project at the Supreme Court in Washington, DC. Christman is restoring four internal courtyards in an extensive project that includes a wide spectrum of trades and skills. From the close-up views only a scaffold tour can provide, they discussed a wide range of methods, challenges, and lessons learned while restoring this national icon. This is a great example of the unique skills APT members bring to projects highly prominent and significant buildings. The scaffolding tour went all the way to the roof, providing a unique perspective on the United States Capitol, which Greg would be visiting just a few weeks later for Preservation Lobby Week.
