The North Carolina School of Banking (NCSB) — the longest running state banking school in the nation — has moved its headquarters to App State, marking a significant milestone in the school’s 88-year history and establishing a strategic partnership designed to enrich academic and professional development opportunities for future banking leaders. Six Walker College of Business students have won the Microsoft Excel Collegiate Challenge (MECC) at Appalachian State University, earning cash prizes for their performance. There were first, second, and third place winners from each of two MECC intra-college competitions, held online April 25 and April 27. The first-place winners are Elcie Blackman and Tori Humler; they each earned a $300 cash prize. Avery Clark and Macie Wilson earned second place and $200 each, and Jack Beatson and Ashley Meacham captured third place and $100 each. The competition challenged participants to complete a series of Excel tasks of increasing levels of difficulty within a short span of 30 minutes. The Walker College Dean’s Office sponsored the competition and funded the cash prizes for the top-performing students. We had the opportunity to host a small group of women leaders from the university as part of their tour of financial companies in the Queen City. The focus of this initiative is to build the representation of women in financial services and inspire them toward varied careers in our industry. The Bowden Investment Group is thrilled to announce that the Broyhill Fellows, comprised of Corbin Lammers, Maximus Pavone, Ashley Meacham, Brianna Gilmore, and Derek Mahato, are champions of the Southeastern Regional CFA Institute Research Challenge. Next week, these students will compete in the Americas Regional semifinal, with live rounds of presentations and Q&A sessions. We are extremely proud of these students. Their dedication and hard work over countless hours have paid off, showcasing the team's exceptional ability and commitment. With an end goal of traveling to Poland to compete in the Global Finals, the CFA team is eager to work and jump over this last hurdle. This week, the Department of Finance, Banking & Insurance has been honored to host Jeffrey Vernor, Vice President & Head of Risk Management for Dimensional Fund Advisors as our 2024 Risk Manager on Campus. Jeff has shared his time, expertise, and insights to students, faculty, and staff of the Walker College of Business at Appalachian State University and we are grateful to him for his generosity of time and spirit. In addition to speaking to accounting, finance and RMI classes, Jeff met with AppRISE (Appalachian Risk Initiative for Student Engagement) members, Appalachian's 2024 Spencer-RIMS Risk Management Challenge team, Appalachian State IMA Chapter, FSA Appalachian State, Appalachian State Gamma Iota Sigma, as well as the university's Enterprise Risk Management Division within our Office of Institutional Integrity. On behalf of Lorilee Medders, FB&I Department Chair, and the Appalachian State University community, we extend our thanks to Jeff and Dimensional for the gift of his time.
