The co-worker who nominated her says: “Rachel comes to work every day with a huge smile on her face. No matter what is going on Rachel takes everything thrown at her with a smile and joke. As a Certified Nurse Midwife at Baker Primary Care Center, Heather provides compassionate care to the women of Avery County—treating each patient like family. One of our family medicine residents shared: "She takes the time to teach residents like me the slow and patient ways of knowing the position of a baby, the needs of a mom and family, and how to handle difficult situations with grace and calm. Her ability to hold space for moms is awe-inspiring, and the way she cares for patients like they are her own family inspires me as I am embarking on my own journey to become a healer. ? Employee Spotlight on Rebekah Chew, RN, BSN ? For 15 years, Rebekah has been a dedicated part of UNC Health Appalachian, currently serving as a Charge Nurse in the Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) at Watauga Medical Center. She plays a vital role in patient recovery, overseeing nursing care, managing staff, and ensuring a smooth transition for patients post-anesthesia. “I really enjoy patient care and actively participating in a patient's immediate post-surgical recovery period. I also really enjoy working alongside such a great team of nurses,” Rebekah shares. During Hurricane Helene, Rebekah stayed at Watauga Medical Center from Thursday through Sunday, ensuring patient care never wavered. She checked on fellow PACU staff, coordinated emergency coverage, and provided care for patients needing surgery—all while being a pillar of strength during the storm. A co-worker described her as “a beacon of hope during the worst of the storm.” On her days off, you’ll find Rebekah sailing on Watauga Lake, relaxing at home with her dogs and a good book, or scuba diving.
