CEO, Infection Prevention Consultant | Helping Healthcare Leaders Build Resilient, Cost-Effective Infection Control Programs, Reducing Infections by 30% Through Organizational Engagement and Leadership Development

Infection prevention and control (IPC) programs are a gold mine for organizations that prioritize a culture of safety and quality. They help prevent infections from spreading, reduce costs and facilitate proactive measures that improve the quality of care. For this dream to become a reality, organizational leaders need to understand the importance of engaging the entire workforce in IPC processes. In this newsletter, I share the common mistakes organizations make when conducting their annual infection control risk assessments and practical steps that healthcare leaders, alongside their infection prevention (IP) teams, can take to promote patient safety and reduce costs. #infectionprevention #infectioncontrol #leadership #healthcare

In long-term care facilities, laundry isn’t just about fresh linens – it’s a frontline defense against infections. Proper laundering of bed sheets, gowns, and towels helps eliminate harmful bacteria, reducing the spread of illness among residents and staff. High temperature washing and drying, proper handling and storage, and routine disinfection of machines all play a critical role in keeping environments safe. When laundry services follow infection control best practices, they protect the most vulnerable. Every load should promote safety, dignity, and care.

  • People don’t expect to get sick when they go to the hospital, but 1 in 30 patients admitted contract an infection. The patients’ immediate environment is increasingly?understood as the key to preventing infections. Soft surfaces—linens, gowns, privacy curtains—are often overlooked in infection control, even though they are in constant contact with patients. SilvaClean? transforms healthcare fabrics into antimicrobials, without changing any existing hospital processes. Key Benefits for Your Facility:? ? HAI Risk Reduction – A whole-house initiative that bolsters your focused-vertical infection prevention bundles, enhancing quality across the board.? ? Cost Savings – By reducing HAI pathogen risks, SilvaClean helps your infection prevention program avoid significant costs.? ? • ?? 'Big Soap's' Big Problem… ?? While major competitors rely on larger soap molecules and enzymes that primarily clean the surface of your fabrics, silver ions are significantly smaller, allowing them to penetrate deeper into the fibers. This enables silver ions to neutralize odors right at the source, giving you fresher fabrics for longer. To illustrate this, if a single repeat unit of polyester (the fibers in athletic wear) were the size of a drinking straw (10 mm), a silver ion would be just the size of a grain of sand (2 mm)! For context, an angstrom (?) is a unit of measurement equal to 1/10 billionth of a meter, often used to measure atomic and molecular sizes. Here’s how a silver ion compares to the leading competitor molecules often used in laundry care: ?? Polyester Repeat Unit (10-15 ?): Drinking Straw (10 mm) ?? Silver Ion (2.52 ?): Grain of Sand (2 mm) ?? Soap Molecules (20-30 ?): Grape (20 mm) ?? Enzymes (30-60 ?): Ping Pong Ball (30 mm) At Applied Silver, Inc., our innovative silver ion technology offers a new perspective on odor management in laundry care, effectively taking on 'big soap' one ion at a time!

    • A visual comparison of molecular sizes in laundry care: a polyester repeat unit is depicted as a drinking straw (10 mm) representing 10-15 angstroms; a silver ion is shown as a grain of sand (2 mm) representing 2.52 angstroms; soap molecules are illustrated as a grape (20 mm) representing 20-30 angstroms; and enzymes are represented as a ping pong ball (30 mm) representing 30-60 angstroms. This graphic highlights the size differences between these molecules in relation to everyday objects.
