??Climbing a 1999’ (609m) broadcast tower to change a light bulb ?? This video was taken by Nick Wagner with NATIONAL TOWER CONTROLS LLC climbing to the top of the KDLT-TV digital broadcast tower in Rowena South Dakota for an annual inspection. The tower has an elevator that will take you up the first 1600 feet (in about 20 minutes) and then it’s manual climbing from there. You can see Nick transition from the tower, to the mast extension, and finally up the 60’ antenna itself to get to the obstruction light. The full video can be seen here: https://lnkd.in/eDChM-64 You may have seen a popular video a few years back showing a guy changing a lightbulb on a tower for "$20,000". The tower shown in that video was actually the analog version of this one also used by KDLT but it was 500’ shorter and collapsed in 2022 due to high winds. Unfortunately, changing a lightbulb on a tower, even one this high off the ground, does not pay anywhere close to $20,000 - it’s more like $500, if that. ?? Fun fact! After that viral video, the FAA created a new rule forbidding drones from flying over 400 feet without permission. Although this tower is the largest in South Dakota, it’s only the 20th largest in the US. All of these large towers are at or just below 2,000’ because both the FCC and the FAA consider anything larger than that a hazard to air traffic. #tower #broadcast #towerclimber #tv #toughjobs #faa
