We continue to optimize our in-field biochar system in the north Texas corn fields. In the coming weeks we will be incorporating a biochar spreading modification to provide even field coverage while continuing to increase system throughput. By integrating a pyrolysis system directly into farm equipment, we produce the lowest applied cost for biochar by eliminating additional material handling and trucking, resulting in massive impact for broad acre agriculture and climate. Thanks to the tireless work of our engineers and our operations team, we have deployed our Gen5 machine to process waste corn stover from the harvest in the Texas panhandle. Each day we are pushing throuput closer to the rated capacity while integrating biochar spreading and incorporation solutions to meet farmers needs. In the coming weeks, two additional machines will join this one to form the first operational fleet of mobile, on-the-fly biochar production machines in the world. By eliminating biomass and biochar transport, we are able to produce biochar at a cost that makes sense to broad acre agriculture AND large scale carbon removal buyers. #biochar #carbonremoval #cdr #regenerativeag #soilhealth

We are excited to announce the winner of the $500,000 Wilkes Climate Launch Prize is Applied Carbon! Applied Carbon, formerly known as Climate Robotics, has developed a mobile, in-field solution that picks up crop residue left after harvesting and converts it into biochar in a single pass. The resulting biochar product is deposited back onto the field, simultaneously increasing soil health, improving agronomic productivity, reducing lime and fertilizer requirements, and providing a durable carbon removal and storage solution. The 2024 Wilkes Climate Launch Prize is one of the largest university-affiliate climate awards in the world and is geared to spur innovation and breakthroughs from organizations at all stages, both for-profits and nonprofits—anywhere in the world—to help fund and accelerate solutions to climate change. To reach meaningful scale for soil improvement and carbon removal, biochar production needs to make use of distributed agricultural biomass, like an opportunistic grazer on the open range. Cotton Gin Byproducts are one such material that we are hungry to process. Corn-Cotton rotations are popular here in the south and we can satisfy the hunger of our mobile fleet by making use of in-field corn stover (when available) and move on to cotton gins when done to keep our machines fed and our farmers happy. A recent article by Farm Progress highlighted some of our work on developing this opportunity. As Greg Holt, the research leader at the USDA-ARS Cotton Production and Processing Research Unit in Lubbock, Texas shared: “Applied Carbon is testing portable units to transport to cotton gin yards. A gin would not have to invest in a pyrolysis unit, which is not a small endeavor … they’d access it though something like a short term lease … The idea that something could pull on site, you don't own it, you're paying a fee for use, and growers benefit from the byproduct is compelling.
