#Telecom's three little words that mean so much: "Configure, Price, Quote." Hence this latest #research note/primer from John Cyriac Abraham that explores why this is such a hot topic for #telcos and the suppliers battling it out in #digitalenablement (next-gen #BSS) space. It offers a point-by-point explanation of why telecom CPQ really is different. A new report from the recent #Fyuz24/Telecom Infra Project event in Dublin, providing takeaways and calling out the notable #OpenRAN updates from AT&T, TELUS and other telcos, plus Ericsson, Samsung Electronics and other vendors. By Robert Curran [paywall/free on subscription] https://lnkd.in/g2ip7cgt
I just published my full writeup from #Fyuz24 in Dublin. Certainly an enjoyable event, well put together by Telecom Infra Project, Eugina Jordan, Kristian Toivo and team. As regards #openRAN, I'll stick by the "glass half full" that I presented first at the i14y Lab event in Berlin, and also in Dublin, but three days at Fyuz provided a great opportunity to add some nuance. Not only because of what was there, but also because of what (who) was not. There were some great quotes: "We've been carrying the industry for four years", "if we can do it, anyone can", "If Open RAN is just a TCO play, that's not enough reason to do it" - attributions in the full report. For the TL;DR brigade, I came away thinking that Open RAN shares something with the market for electric vehicles (EVs). It’s the right way to go, but maybe it’s the car *after* my next one. The early adopter customers are – to quote Vodafone – “not going back”. But there’s not yet enough compulsion for *most people* to make the switch, and so external factors (government subsidy, geopolitics) are needed to drive change. And guess what: the big players – the BMW and Volkswagens, Fords and Kia of telecom - are now firmly in on the act, while electric-only pioneers lose their early advantage.
