“The only reason we didn’t have mass street panic in America [in the 2008 financial crisis] was because of the personal computer. My grandma called me in the middle of all this and said ‘Are we going to have bank lines like we did when I was a kid?’ I said, ‘That's ridiculous.’ Well, here's why. When she was a kid, people lined up outside of banks. Because of the personal computer, everyone who’s listening to this podcast right now, they all moved money during the crisis, but they did it on the computer so you didn’t have the scary visual. We didn’t have a scary visual because otherwise you would have had people in the streets.” In this episode of Applecart’s “Decision Makers” podcast, Executive Chairman of TrailRunner, former Head of Corporate Affairs at Alibaba, and former Deputy National Security Advisor for Communications Jim Wilkinson discusses what it was like to lead in the 2008 financial crisis. We’re honored to share that Harvard Business School published a case study on Applecart’s journey from a University of Pennsylvania dorm room start-up to a category-creating technology company serving hundreds of Fortune 500 C-suites and other leading organizations. This month, Applecart Co-Founders and Co-CEOs Matthew Kalmans and Sacha Samotin and Board Member Jennifer Scott Fonstad had the pleasure of joining Professor Jeffrey F Rayport's “Scaling Technology Ventures” class at HBS to see the case taught to nearly 150 second-year MBAs and meet with students. Thank you to all of the students for the great discussion, Professor Rayport for telling the Applecart story, and the many Applecart-ers who participated in the decisions that formed the basis of the case over the years. This is just the beginning!

At Applecart, we believe great teams are built through shared experiences—and sometimes, that means rolling out the red carpet. Our team recently had the chance to enjoy a screening of “Captain America: Brave New World” at the Regal Theater, making for a memorable night away from the office. We’re proud to be consistently ranked as one of the best places to work in New York, DC, and nationwide. Explore our open roles: www.applecart.co/careers.

Applecart was proud to support National Press Foundation and its mission to empower the next generation of journalists. It was great to see so many clients and friends support this important cause. Congratulations to Bennett Richardson and Meredith Casey McPhillips on a great night!

Applecart was glad to attend PRWeek’s PRDecoded and Healthcare Conferences last month. It was great to connect with clients, partners, and friends and share learnings about how companies are meeting this important moment in communications. Sue Ann Pentecost of Bayer put it well when she said: "It’s in our hands. We shape the message—for employees, the media, investors, communities, patients, and physicians. It’s an awesome responsibility, and one we shouldn’t take lightly.”

"Hank Paulson went to see President Bush, a meeting in which I was in, and asked: 'How hard is it going to be politically?' And the President said, 'You let me worry about the politics. You do what's right for the country.'" In this episode of Applecart’s “Decision Makers” podcast, Executive Chairman of TrailRunner, former Head of Corporate Affairs at Alibaba, and former Deputy National Security Advisor for Communications, Jim Wilkinson, discusses how decisions were made during the most challenging days of the 2008 financial crisis. “I love this within our industry because communications—and what Applecart does, what we do at TrailRunner, what any firm does—used to be a cost center. It’s now become the spinal cord of the P&L. Within that spinal cord, where the megatrends of finance, PR, comms, and litigation are all crashing together, that nucleus is where Applecart, frankly, is the best in the world. That’s where you want to be working. You're making cars while the rest of the world makes buggy whips.” In this episode of Applecart’s “Decision Makers” podcast, Executive Chairman of TrailRunner, former Head of Corporate Affairs at Alibaba, and former Deputy National Security Advisor for Communications Jim Wilkinson speaks to how communications has evolved to a position at the center of the C-suite. We are honored that Applecart has been named 2025 Best Places to Work in New York and DC for the third year in a row by Built In! As a result of our growth, this year we were rated for the first time in the “mid-sized company” category. This recognition wouldn’t possible without all of the hard work and dedication of our team that make Applecart such a special place to work. Over the course of 2024 we hired 75(!) exceptional people and we’re not stopping there. We’re continuing to hire across departments as we grow rapidly.
