Just wrapped up a fantastic UESI - Utility Engineering and Surveying Institute 2024 Pipelines Conference. The UESI conference kicked off with Saturday's Large Diameter Pipeline Users Forum. A not oft talked about component of inspection platforms is the inertial measurement unit (IMU). The IMU allows us to transpose the results of our structural (distress) inspection to an owner’s GIS, and APPIA’s equipment employs a best-in-class IMU to accurately map your pipeline. This not only enables highly targeted validation digs and repairs, but also allows us to confirm burial depth, which is a key component in risk curve calculations. Reliable distance tracking is crucial for every internal inspection and APPIA has designed a novel system to integrate the pipe integrity data with our odometry. Our premium NFT-MD tool tracks the rotation of all 4 contact wheels with our integrated electronics packaged in completely waterproof housings. This means submersion (even if unplanned) will not adversely affect the performance of the equipment and APPIA’s analysts will always have access to the most reliable data possible.

APPIA recently tested our EM inspection platform on a unique PCCP main. Over a short 0.5-mile stretch, the pipeline transitioned between 12 (!) pressure classes, some employing 3/16” thick steel cylinders. Our multidimensional electromagnetics allowed us to assess the different pipe classes simultaneously, and we were delighted to see that the platform performed above expectation. We are thrilled to announce the deployment of our newest lightweight electromagnetic inspection platform. The system is compact and portable enough that the inspection crew can conveniently take the equipment with them on a plane, complete with UN certified batteries! This allows the crew (pictured here) to literally hit the ground running upon arrival.
