Appalshop started as a film workshop in 1969, and 50 years later we're still making films about Appalachia and so much more. We're a radio station, a theater, a public art gallery, a record label, an archive, a filmmaking institute, a community development program — telling our stories, in our voices, on our terms. #appalachia #appalachians #appalachianmountains #mountain #mountainlife #mountainpeople #mountainstories #mountainart #mountainmusic #easternkentucky #community #film #filmmaking #development #artgallery

Making art and media in the mountains since 1969
关于我们
Appalshop started as a film workshop in 1969, and 50 years later we're still making films about Appalachia. We also operate a radio station, a theater, a public art gallery, a record label, a professional archive, a filmmaking institute, and a community development program — all aimed at documenting and revitalizing the traditions and creativity of the people of these mountains. We tell stories that commercial industries don’t tell. We challenge stereotypes with Appalachian voices. And we do it all with artists who are from and committed to this region. Stream one of our films, come take in a live performance, or tune into our radio station from anywhere in the world.

It's still common here in Appalachia for food to come from personal hunting, trapping, or butchering. Whatever's on your table—Happy Thanksgiving from Eastern Kentucky. For some, this coming weekend is Black Friday weekend—a day at the big box stores. For others, it's time to make things by hand. Quilting Women traces the process of traditional Appalachian quilting, from cutting out and piecing together the patterns to the quilting bee. Quilters comment on the origins of the generations-old patterns, the time and patience required, the satisfaction of accomplishment, the quilts as art, and the companionship offered by women working together over a quilting frame. ??? The season of giving is here, and we need YOUR support! Over two years after the 2022 floods, the Appalshop Archive team is still hard at work recovering priceless artifacts of Appalachian history. This Giving Tuesday, December 3, help us continue restoring treasures like the "Appalshop Chair," designed and crafted by Chester Cornett during the filming of "Hand Carved" by Herb E. Smith in 1981. With just $50, we can hire a professional to restore this piece to its original glory. Ready to make a difference? You don’t have to wait for Giving Tuesday — our fundraiser is live now! Giving Tuesday is here, and we’re asking for YOUR help to support the Appalshop Archive in restoring items damaged in the 2022 floods. This fundraiser will help preserve treasures from our folk arts collection—wooden sculptures, handcrafted furniture, quilts, and more—allowing them to be exhibited and celebrated once again. Recovery is a slow process, and it takes a community. This Giving Tuesday, December 3, help bring Appalachian history back to life. Don’t wait—our fundraiser is live now! Roving Pickets looks at the consequences of this change in Eastern Kentucky: severely reduced wages, chronic unemployment, families divided by outmigration, and in 1961 and 1962, the cancelation of union health insurance benefits and the threatened closing of the UMWA hospitals. Roving Pickets raises questions about poverty and empowerment, equality of opportunity, and the process of political change. This past week, our Film department crew attended The University of Virginia's College at Wise Appalachian Heritage Week and hosted a presentation of Appalshop works, new and old! They showcased the 2000's classic "Stranger with a Camera," produced by Elizabeth Barret, as well as a five minute teaser of an upcoming Appalshop film, "Roof Over My Head," produced by Madison Buchanan, exploring houselessness in rural communities. Stay tuned for more updates on this film and other films coming soon from our Film department! And special thanks to Jared Sloan in the Office of Student Affairs and Amy Clark, Professor of Communication and Appalachian Studies, for inviting us to be a part of Appalachian Heritage Week.
