In the 1980s, Jeff Hawkins and Dee Davis were playing basketball when they began envisioning a media training program for young Appalachians. This idea became the foundation of the Appalachian Media Institute. More than 35 years later, we continue to fulfill their original mission—putting cameras in the hands of young people. In 1925, Mary Breckinridge founded the Frontier Nursing Service to bring nurse-midwives to rural Kentucky, establishing outpost clinics across 700 square miles of mountain terrain. FNS grew into a hospital and remains a key training center for nurse-midwives. "Frontier Nursing Service" combines insights from early nurse-midwife Betty Lester with scenes from "The Forgotten Frontier" (1930), a film by Breckinridge’s cousin, depicting nurse-midwives on horseback delivering babies, treating gunshot wounds, and vaccinating children.
