Hey everybody, Joshua Garrison here, taking over the Apollo.io page to re-work a cold email into something that’s more likely to get a reply.??? This email was sent to a good friend of mine who’s a high-ranking executive at Google. Let’s break this down starting at the top — the subject line: “Surprising silence”... the thing is, I get where the sender is coming from here. This is probably the third or fourth email in a sequence, and they’re looking to break through the noise. And they succeeded!?This email got opened, but for all the wrong reasons. The tone of “surprising silence”, and the postscript demanding he acknowledge receipt of the email, makes it seem like he owes the sender something, and is doing something wrong by not replying. The last thing ANYONE wants from a cold email is a scolding. It’s about good vibes, y’all. ?? The truth is, when you send a cold email, the recipient owes you nothing. YOU owe THEM a relevant, value-add email. Moving on to the body copy, this is so bland and so “me” (the sender) focused that there’s really not anything in this for the recipient. It also makes a reference to “your priorities have shifted”, but this is an outbound email, not inbound! Who knows if this was ever a priority in the first place? Given the sender’s industry —?market research — this culminates in a non-starter. So let’s re-work it to go from vague and scold-y to specific, relevant, and potentially valuable. ?? Subject Line:?AI’s impact on global Media legislation —?new market research (I know the M in media shouldn’t be capitalized. I did it on purpose — it’s a human error a human would make ??) Body Copy: Hey {{recipient}}, I’m working on market research of AI’s impact on media legislation globally that I thought you might find valuable. We’re in the early stages of scoping this out and I’d love to include you from the beginning. I figured this kind of thing would be in your wheelhouse given your long experience in the space, but if I’m wrong please let me know. Are there any questions top of mind for you right now with regards to how governments and media bodies are handling AI’s use in media? Companies like Google have hired us in the past to do research in countries or regions where they don’t have boots on the ground. Would love to be able to work any of your needs into our research —?I’ve got a global team of 25 ready to start work on this. Hope to hear from you, Josh
