I’ve been getting so many texts/emails/DMs about this asking for my opinion, many essentially cheering it on as being great for the growth of the non-alcoholic market and Aplós specifically. Of course, I’m glad people are waking up to the harms of alcohol, and that studies like the ones cited in this piece are being done and shared with the public so they can be more aware and make their own informed choices. I’ve always been a reluctant drinker because I rarely found the trade off with alcohol worth it. It felt like borrowing tomorrow’s happiness for today. And I never understood when people would guilt or shame me for not wanting a drink in social situations. These personal experiences are what led me to want to start Aplós… the desire to enjoy everything I love about drinking — the elevated experience, the sophisticated and complex flavor profiles, the buzz — without the health trade offs of alcohol. But, to be clear, it’s never been about replacing alcohol completely. We are not cheering for its death. I still enjoy the occasional alcoholic cocktail or glass of wine with dinner. It’s about giving people more choices when they want to unwind or connect.? Most of us know that vices like alcohol are not “good for us.” Anything in excess is bad. It’s all about balance and having options. The way we define “drinking” is changing, and that’s exciting. As we began work on this in the summer of 2023, I told the team that I selfishly wanted an amazing NA alternative to a rosé. Lynnette Marrero suggested we create a cocktail with ume, a japanese plum, and made the most amazing cocktail for us with Aplós Calme. Emily Onkey, Andy Brooks, Char O'Hara, Wendy and I tasted it and immediately knew we had something special. It was familiar yet completely new... dry and tart with a hint of sweet. It was perfect.
