  • Mark your calendars! The Asian Pacific Institute on Gender-Based Violence (API-GBV) is thrilled to announce our January 2025 installment of our AANHPI & MENA Interpreter's Corner on January 30th, a dynamic and supportive space dedicated to spoken and sign language interpreters working in the domestic violence and sexual assault (DV/SA) field or who are interested in learning more about the field. This gathering held every last Thursday of the month (excluding Holidays) is designed to grow our interpreter network, enhance interpretation skills, and address the unique challenges faced by interpreters in this critical area. This month’s topic: Memory and Note-taking as a Trauma-Informed Practice This month's session will focus on reinforcing essential memory retention and note-taking skills vital for trauma-informed interpreting. While vocabulary and language fluency are important, strong memory is crucial for maintaining accuracy in interpretation. We will explore effective strategies to enhance both short-term and long-term memory, ensuring interpreters can accurately convey sensitive information in high-stress environments. Participants will practice note-taking techniques that improve accuracy and efficiency in victim services contexts, ultimately fostering a more supportive environment for survivors of gender-based violence to exercise communicative autonomy. When: Thursday, January 30th, 2025 Time: 4 PM EST | 3 PM CST | 2 PM MST | 1 PM PST | 12 PM HST | 6 AM ChST (next day) Location: Zoom RSVP: https://lnkd.in/gSrGpeXq New and experienced interpreters, we welcome your expertise! Come prepared to share your most challenging experiences and innovative solutions. Your insights will help shape best practices in our field. See flier attached for more details. We look forward to welcoming you to the Interpreter's Corner. For more information, please contact [email protected]. Warm regards, Healing Across Languages Team

  • As we ring in the new year, we are sharing the bittersweet news that our Director of Policy, Grace Huang, will be transitioning out of her role at API-GBV as she begins a new chapter in her career. Over the past 9 years, Grace has been a fierce advocate for AA, NHPI, MENA, and immigrant survivors and their communities. Her vast knowledge of public policy and systems and ability to connect with lawmakers, stakeholders, and community leaders has been critical to API-GBV's work and impact. Grace's expertise has given support to innumerable organizations and advocates in the gender-based violence and immigration policy spaces and we are grateful for her contributions and leadership. While she will be dearly missed as an API-GBV staff member, we are confident that she will continue to thrive and advocate for our communities in any role she holds. Please join us in congratulating and wishing Grace all the best in her new endeavors! Grace's last day with API-GBV will be Friday, January 10th. You can stay connected with?Grace?on?LinkedIn:?https://lnkd.in/gPYCFXtE. During this transition period, our Policy Team continues to work hard and stay active in supporting and advocating for survivors. Any inquiries for our Policy Team can be directed to policy[at]api-gbv.org. Thank you, Grace, for all you have done for survivors and their communities!

  • ???New Resource Now Available: AANHPI Elder Safety & Wellness Case Studies ???https://lnkd.in/giWM9sVM In partnership with the National Health Resource Center on DV, Futures Without Violence, API-GBV is releasing five case scenarios. Each case scenario includes reflection questions and discussion points on how to support an elder and their family, and they illustrate what domestic violence and other forms of abuse and neglect might look like for AANHPI elders. Case scenarios surface dynamics such as historical trauma, cycles of violence, cognitive decline, complex relationships with adult children, and AAPI-hate to show the nuances of elder abuse in AANHPI communities. This resource can be used by trainers, educators, and DV/SA advocates and other service providers working with this population. #DVAM #DVAM2024 #EndGBV #SupportSurvivors #CaseStudy

Today, on the 30th anniversary of the signing of the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA), API-GBV joins our communities in celebrating the impact VAWA has had in supporting survivors of gender-based violence. VAWA has played a critical role in providing services for survivors from AA and NHPI communities, identifying and filling gaps in support, and strengthening our communities’ ability to reach out to those facing the highest barriers to safety. With the support provided by VAWA, AA and NHPI-serving advocates and community based organizations have been able to further provide for their communities and the unique needs of AA and NHPI survivors. API-GBV commends VAWA for supporting survivors and helping us transform into a world free of gender-based violence.
