Backed by federal and state support, our efforts aim to create scalable, sustainable solutions while generating jobs and fostering innovation right here in St. Louis. The National Science Foundation (NSF) has invited the API Innovation Center (APIIC) to submit a full proposal to the NSF Regional Innovation Engines program for up to $160 million in funding over 10 years. This opportunity underscores NSF’s recognition of our work to address national drug shortages and bolster health security by reshoring key starting materials (KSMs) and active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) with new API chemical pathways and innovative technologies. APIIC’s proposal, "Reshoring KSM and API Manufacturing Through Innovation," was one of 71 selected from 250 submissions, and we’re excited to move forward. Our proposal, developed in collaboration with over 30 organizations across diverse strategic workgroup pillars, aims to boost the regional economy, create high-quality jobs and build a resilient domestic supply of essential medications to strengthen national health security. With the continued support of our incredible collaborators, APIIC is ready to make a lasting impact on the Missouri region and the nation’s pharmaceutical resilience.
