The API Innovation Center is proud to be at the forefront of efforts to reshore active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) manufacturing—boosting the regional economy and creating new jobs. Our efforts, as highlighted in a recent article by WashU’s Center for Analytics and Business Insights, could bring $1.2 billion to the St. Louis economy over the next five years. With six new APIs already in development, we're on a mission to address drug shortages and strengthen the drug supply chain through research, innovations in advanced manufacturing, contracts with existing U.S. manufacturers and partnerships with healthcare systems and pharmacy retailers. On November 13, 2024, the API Innovation Center will host its 2nd annual plenary event, A Bold Goal: Pathway to Build U.S. Drug Supply Chain Resilience. Join us as we continue the critical dialogue started at last year’s plenary event to advance the administration's goal of reshoring 25% of small molecule API production to the U.S. within five years. We look forward to welcoming stakeholders, industry leaders, and subject matter experts as we build on last year's Bold Goals Report and provide recommendations to the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy. Last week, the API Innovation Center unveiled results from an economic study conducted by the Center for Analytics and Business Insights at Washington University titled, "Revitalizing U.S. Pharma: Evaluating the Economic and Social Impacts of Advanced API Manufacturing in Missouri." Based on report data, APIIC’s long-term goal of reshoring 25 medicines in 5 years is projected to generate $1.2 billion in economic activity or up to $51 million in economic impact per molecule for the state of Missouri. This includes: - A direct impact of up to $23.2 million from job creation and production activities; - An indirect impact of up to $2.7 million from supporting industries; and - An induced impact of up to $25.2 million from local spending by wage earners. The API Innovation Center is dedicated to stimulating Missouri's economic development and expanding its leadership in pharmaceutical manufacturing and as an API innovation hub.
