It enabled millions to access financial services, boosting small businesses and household incomes. 4- Bangladesh: The ready-made garment (RMG) industry, driven by private enterprises, has turned Bangladesh into one of the world’s leading textile exporters. Project Milestone Achieved: Policy Review for Liberia’s SEZ Development Apex team is delighted to share the successful conclusion of our project to conduct a comprehensive Policy Review of Liberia’s existing policies to align the country’s regulatory framework with the aspirations of its Special Economic Zones (SEZ) development. This is where the Human Capital Project (HCP), a global effort to accelerate more and better investments in people for greater equity and economic growth, led by the WBG is working with countries and partners to come together and close the massive human capital gap in the world. Access to energy, particularly renewable and affordable energy, is essential to every aspect of people’s lives. This is particularly true in developing countries, where access to reliable energy is often limited and comes at a high cost. UNCTAD’s World Investment Report 2023 reveals a widening annual investment deficit that developing countries face. The report shows that global foreign direct investment (FDI) fell by 12% in 2022, and it highlights that developing countries need renewable energy investments of about $1.7 trillion each year but attracted only $544 billion in clean energy FDI in 2022. Although investments in renewable energy have nearly tripled since 2015, most of the money has gone to developed countries. They are a “high-risk, high reward” instrument, as the global results of SEZs in developing countries are quite mixed.
