Tomorrow is World Water Day, a time to recognize the importance of protecting our vital water resources. Protected against coastal flooding, the Gloucester, Massachusetts Water Pollution Control Facility completed its Flood Resilience Improvements project last year. The improvements not only protect current operations of the City’s most critical wastewater asset, but also establish a protected perimeter for the future treatment upgrades scheduled for the next few years. The Flood Resilience improvements included an earthen berm, a steel sheetpile wall, and a cast-in-place concrete wall with a series of four self-deploying flood gates along Essex Avenue. The flood gates manufactured by FloodBreak, LLC and are the first installation of these type of gates at a municipal wastewater facility in New England. The Flood Resilience Improvements provide the City with confidence and peace of mind that operations of the wastewater facility can be maintained in the face of coastal storm events and sea level rise. Apex supported Weaver Sanitation, a multi-generational family owned and operated municipal waste hauler in developing an Operations Facility, Municipal Waste Transfer Station, and a Recycling Transfer Station located in Breezewood, Bedford County, PA. While Weaver Sanitation continued daily household garbage pick-up and hauls to the local landfills, a property subdivision was prepared for a 6-acre development and permitting for a 350 tons/day Municipal Waste Transfer Facility thus allowing more available time for garbage pick-up, while reducing the number of individual garbage truck trips to the landfills. The Breezewood Transfer Station was constructed in 2012. The Weaver Family Hauling Business was relocated to the site with the construction of an office and vehicle maintenance facility in 2021, and a Recycling Transfer Station was constructed in 2024. The development of a state-of-the-art residential garbage and recycling facility by Apex Companies in collaboration with the Weaver family demonstrated their foresight and ability to reduce garbage truck traffic on local roads while still disposing at landfills and supporting local solid waste plans and regulations. Apex continues to support the waste haulers with several current and on-going permitting, design, and construction projects for Waste Transfer Stations. These facilities also provide a place for the public to take their waste and recyclables and supports natural disaster clean-up by providing a place for waste to go when landfills are closed. #ApexCompanies Matt Horton PE

If you had the opportunity to help shape the future of your local downtown, what would you prioritize? As the Town of Needham, MA embarks on the next phase of its downtown renovation project "Envision Needham Center", this is the exact question stakeholders are being asked. The design team, a partnership between Apex and Toole Design, is seeking input as they work on the conceptual design phase. In early February, the design team hosted the second in-person community event with an all-day Open House at Town Hall. Additionally, residents, business owners, and stakeholders were provided a platform to share observations about the corridor, voice their ideas, and share their vision through guided walking tours, with a self-led option available for the community to participate in through the end of the month. Thus far, the community has expressed a desire for safe and accessible bicycle infrastructure, landscaping, and to improve accommodations for pedestrians. In 2024, Apex managed the remediation of a gasoline release in accordance with local laws governing spill prevention and control. The release occurred when a customer at a local gas station drove away with the nozzle still attached to their vehicle, causing gasoline to spill across a concrete parking lot and enter an on-site stormwater drain. The stormwater system carried the release approximately 1,630 feet to an unnamed intermittent creek. Apex directed emergency response personnel to contain the spill, recover gasoline and contaminated water, and mitigate further migration. Sheen and odor were observed at the creek outfall, prompting the deployment of absorbent booms along the creek to contain and absorb the contamination. The concrete surface and stormwater drain were decontaminated using power washing and an aqueous Micro-Blaze solution, while the stormwater piping was flushed with the same treatment.
