I appreciated the opportunity to provide my input and feedback on this important report, "Women in the Workplace 10th Anniversary" report, by McKinsey & Company x LeanIn.org. "This year's Women in the Workplace report provides a 10 year look at women's advancement across the pipeline. It's clear Corporate America has made some strides in women's representation, but progress is fragile and unsustainable. Despite progress, it will take almost 50 years to reach parity for all women in Corporate America. Over the past decade, women’s representation has increased at every level of corporate management. Most notably, women today make up 29 percent of C-suite positions, compared with just 17 percent in 2015. But progress has been much slower earlier in the pipeline, at the entry and manager levels. Women continue to face barriers at the beginning of the pipeline. They remain less likely than men to be hired into entry-level roles, which leaves them underrepresented from the start. Then, women are far less likely than men to attain their very first promotion to a manager role—a situation that’s not improving. In 2018, for every 100 men who received their first promotion to manager in 2018, 79 women were promoted; this year, just 81 women were. Because of this “broken rung” in the corporate ladder, men significantly outnumber women at the manager level, making it incredibly difficult for companies to support sustained progress at more senior levels. This phenomenon is even worse for women of color, who represent only 7 percent of current C-suite positions—just a four-percentage-point increase since 2017." What an inspiring evening in NYC with with these incredible non-profit leaders. "Estée Lauder announced the launch of its inaugural Emerging Leaders Beautiful Forces grants, furthering the brand's commitment to women’s leadership. Through a partnership via the Estée Lauder Emerging Leaders Fund (ELELF) and grantee, Vital Voices Global Partnership, the new initiative will deepen the brand’s investment in supporting emerging women leaders globally and helping to advance their influence and impact. Vital Voices, the Global non-profit investing in women leaders, was selected as the inaugural program partner of the ELELF. The Estée Lauder Emerging Leaders Beautiful Forces grants will support Vital Voices network alumni who are leading NGOs, businesses, or implementing projects that advance a bold idea. An initial award of $200,000 will be allocated between four recipients who demonstrate innovative thinking, a desire to challenge the status quo, and the ability to take calculated risks to solve a problem impacting their communities." The incredible awardees are: Amina Mohamed, Canada.?Mohamed is the founder of?Cameras for Girls, an organization that challenges gender disparities in media, equipping girls in Africa with cameras to empower them with greater access and opportunity in media-based careers. This grant will allow the organization to launch a train-the-trainer program, increasing access to programs by up to 20%. Consuelo Hermosilla González, Chile.?Hermosilla González is the founder of?Fundación Antonia,?an organization that?works to eliminate intimate partner violence by providing free care and support to survivors, while raising awareness to eradicate gender violence in Chile. This grant will enable the execution of a variety of workshops, training sessions and skill-building programs to educate communities on domestic violence prevention. Olasumbo Adeleke, Nigeria.?Adeleke is the executive director of?Gender Power Africa, which works to improve the livelihoods of small holder farmers, especially women and youth, in rural communities through economic empowerment, training and capacity building. This grant will help enable the creation of a climate-smart shea nut processing facility in Nigeria, expanding the output of shea butter from 2 tons per month to 3 tons per day while providing additional jobs and skills training for women in the community. Renata Koch Alvarenga, Brazil.?Koch Alvarenga is the founder of?EmpoderaClima, a youth-led organization that raises awareness about the impacts of climate change on women and the role of gender-transformative climate education. This grant will enable the execution of workshops on disaster preparedness, the creation of an interactive platform with learning resources, as well as data collection and mapping to support disaster management. I had the honor of representing The Center for Asian Pacific American Women at a very special event. "President Biden delivered remarks at the White House to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the signing of the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA), landmark bipartisan legislation that he wrote and championed as a U.S. Senator and has worked across the aisle to strengthen ever since. He will reflect on the significant progress we have made in reducing violence and supporting survivors as well as the work ahead to realize VAWA’s promise of a nation where every woman and girl can live free from fear, free from violence, and free from abuse. Working to end gender-based violence has been a cornerstone of President Biden’s and Vice President Harris’ careers. VAWA was the first comprehensive federal law to focus on preventing and addressing violence against women and to provide justice and support for survivors. The law transformed the nation’s response to gender-based violence by recognizing that domestic violence and sexual assault are not a private matter but rather a violation of fundamental rights and dignity. Between 1993 and 2022, annual domestic violence rates dropped by 67% and the rate of rapes and sexual assaults declined by 56%. In the three decades since the original VAWA was signed into law, President Biden has worked with survivors, advocates, experts, and Members of Congress of both parties to reauthorize and strengthen the law four times. As President, he signed into law the VAWA Reauthorization Act of 2022—critical legislation that expands access to safety and support for survivors, increases prevention efforts, and establishes new federal protections against online harassment and abuse. The President and Vice President also secured the highest-ever funding levels to implement VAWA, and the Biden-Harris Administration has acted quickly to implement the law’s new programs and protections."
