?? State of Transportation Planning Call for Abstracts is Live! ?? Earlier this fall we asked for your input into the report. We heard from dozens of planners from throughout the United States about what we should emphasize as well as what we should avoid. We also heard that the report should support the practitioners and decision makers with relevant research, examples, lessons learned, and recommendations. In light of this input, we welcome papers, reports, and sample projects from a wide range of authors. We want to hear about successes (and failures) in the field, emerging technology and practices, and research from a variety of sources, including non-transportation planners. Equity is a broad concept, and we want to hear from a broad set of authors! What to emphasize: effective public engagement, compensating public engagement participants for their time, granular data collection and analysis to assist the transportation planning process, human-oriented transportation planning, safety for all, reframing equity as a justice issue, pollution, effective use of federal grants designed to address these issues, and integration with land use planning. Full details are listed in the call for abstracts portal, now open until December 6, 2024: https://buff.ly/4e3UdCD

Register now for the latest APA Sustainability & Resilience Series webinar on Friday, October 25th: "Sustainable Urban Design: A Comprehensive Approach", presented by Nico Larco, University of Oregon Professor and Director of the Urbanism Next Center, with an introduction by Merrill St. Leger, Principal of Urban Planning and Design at SmithGroup and Immediate Past Chair of the APA Sustainable Communities Division. Register here: https://lnkd.in/eVyynYdM Urban design impacts the sustainability of communities in important ways. Sustainability on the urban design scale has gained interest over the past few decades and yet remains a fragmented field lacking a unified approach. The wide range of scales, disciplines, and areas of expertise involved in sustainable urban design has made it difficult to fully understand and apply in real-world projects. Nico Larco, Professor of Architecture and Urban Design at the University of Oregon, will present the Sustainable Urban Design Framework, a new, comprehensive approach to sustainable urban design built from current research and best practices from across the fields of architecture, landscape architecture, planning, development, ecology, and environmental engineering. The framework organizes over 50 specific urban design elements in relation to five sustainability-focused outcomes and four scales of intervention. The Sustainable Urban Design Framework is the focus of the recently published Sustainable Urban Design Handbook, a graphically rich and easy to use resource for designers, planners, developers, elected officials, and community stakeholders. This session will offer 1.0 AICP S&R CM or 1.5 AICP regular CM. The session is scheduled from 1 to 2:30pm ET.

Survey due this Friday! If you are looking for a way to volunteer with the APA TPD, the SoTP Report is a great way to get involved.
REMINDER - TPD is starting the process of developing the 2025 State of Transportation Planning (SOTP) Report. Please complete this survey to provide your input into the development of the report, and how you can help. The focus is on equity and how to define, describe, operationalize and internalize it as part of the transportation planning process. The survey is open through October 18. Later in the fall we will open the process for submittals, so start thinking of a submittal! We welcome papers, reports, and sample projects from a wide range of stakeholders – these do not need to be solely academic submittals. We want to hear from practitioners and advocates as much as from researchers. You do not need to be a member of APA or the TPD, although member submittals will be given special consideration. SURVEY: https://buff.ly/3Nd09y3 For the SOTP, we need graphic design and website development experts to help develop a format for the report, as well as the web page that will serve as the repository for all of the multi-media materials (podcasts, story maps, YouTube videos, etc.). We also need reviewers to help us read the submittals. Finally, we need some utility players - folks who can help out with random assignments. We expect this process to kick off in earnest in November 2024 and be complete by December 2025. This is a volunteer effort, and we will be respectful of your time.
