Sepsis is a leading cause of death in US hospitals. Treating it effectively—saving lives—demands prompt intervention. Since establishing a dedicated sepsis team and creating a sepsis prevention and survivorship program, Lee Health has reduced the average length of stay for patients with sepsis by two days and has reduced mortality by 18%—or 110 lives saved in one year. The program follows?guidelines from the CDC’s Hospital Sepsis Program Core Elements, uses Epic’s Early Detection of Sepsis cognitive computing model to help identify at-risk patients, and leverages remote patient monitoring to help patients care for themselves after leaving the hospital.
