Thank you for highlighting such valuable insights into supporting nurse leaders, especially around time ownership, foundational competencies, and realistic goal-setting. We’re proud to see the emphasis on ‘The Leader Within,’ a core component of AONL’s Nurse Leader Competencies. This approach ensures novice leaders are equipped with the skills they need to build confidence, foster meaningful relationships, and drive impactful change. Let’s continue these important conversations about what nurse leaders need to thrive and how we can all work together to empower them. #NurseLeadership #LeadershipDevelopment
CEO @ Radius Leaders | Nurse Executive, Nurse Leader Development (NLD) Expert, & Lifelong Learner (aka PhD student)
Senior #nurseleaders & #Magnet program leaders: Here are three things that I see senior leaders overlook, which lead to less desirable outcomes than they wish from their teams. Do you do any of these? 1.????????????????? ?????? ???????????????????? ???? ?????? ?????????????? ???????????? ?????? "???????? ??????????????????" ?????? ?????? ?????????? ?????????????? ???? ?????????? ???????? ?????? ?????? "?????????????? ???? ????????" (?????? ??????????????????). This is different than traditional time management, as that infers that we have enough of it, or that we just fit more into less space. ???????? ?????????????????? is an approach to offer support to enable nurse leaders to incrementally reclaim, you guessed it, time which in turn incrementally improves their confidence and sense of purpose. 2.??????????? ??????, ?????? ?????? ??????, ?????????? ???????????????? ?????? ?????????????????????? ?????? ?????????? ???????????? ?????????? ??????????????. Yes, your new nurse leaders want to learn about the budget and productivity and supply chain management - this is true for nearly all new nurse leaders. However, focusing on the competencies associated with "The Leader Within" as the American Organization for Nursing Leadership identifies it, is the fundamental component to their success...first. (This is why item #1 is so important and impactful as it is a part of the "leader within"). This should be (but often isn't) followed by strategic learning on another AONL competency: Communication and Relationship Management (aka rounds and employee or colleague conversations). 3.????????????????? ??????, ?????? ?????? ?????? ??????????, ?????????? ?????????? ???????????????????? ???????? ???????? ??????????????????. We mean well when we set targets for nurse leaders to complete X # of rounds per day or X # of employee rounds per month. But this goes wrong when a nurse manager feels ??) it's not realistic, so defeat sets in ?????? ??)? others around them can't do it either, so it's not possible ?????? then ??) they are under-skilled TO do it, so even when they do, it doesn't feel productive. (Worth noting that this is a phenomenon rooted in the science of self-efficacy; stay tuned for my dissertation ????????) Is any of this describing where you are at? Remember: ???? ???? ?????????? ???? ???????????????????? ?????????? ?????????????? ???????? ???? ??????????????, ???? ?????? ???? ?????????????????????????? ??????????????. What matters most is how they feel about their work and are equipped to get started... and success will follow.
