Just last week, I had the honor of participating in the World Anti-Microbial Resistance Congress held in Philadelphia. My mind is still buzzing with the wealth of knowledge that was shared, but one presentation stands out. Catherine BERTRAND-FERRANDIS from OLYLO Company, during her insightful talk on “How can we protect from infodemic impacts? A Onde Health perspective on the information environment”, threw light on the complex interplay between information overload and its influence on public health. The in-depth discussion on Infodemic Management was indeed an eye-opener. It demonstrated how crucial authentic and accurate information is to reach the public, especially in the era of fake news and misinformation. Quality information is not just a pursuit of knowledge, it is a lifesaver. The need for effective strategies to fight false information is urgent, now more than ever. During this Sepsis Awareness Month, I was honored to meet with Thomas Heymann CEO of Sepsis Alliance and discuss how ASP pharmacists, leading antimicrobial stewardship initiatives across acute care community hospitals, can play a pivotal role in patient advocacy and the fight against AMR. Thank you for the inspiring ideas, Thomas! I look forward to the #opportunity to speak Sepsis Alliance in the future on the important topic of operationalizing clinical wisdom in the context of sepsis. Day 2 of the World Anti-Microbial Resistance Congress highlighted diagnostic stewardship as the key focus. Learning from researchers on a variety of available methods—AmpC detection kits, rapid urine culture tests in UK, synthetic anti-infectives in Australia, and biofire multiplex PCR tests bioMérieux —showcased the cutting-edge advancements in this space. The discussions around antibiofilms, breakthrough biological therapeutics in surgery, trauma care, and metagenomics were truly enlightening. Special thanks to John Alter (AMR Action Fund) for facilitating a fantastic conversation on leveraging partnerships for antimicrobial developments. I also want to extend my gratitude to Bala Subramanian, Yann Ferrisse (Global Antibiotic R&D Partnership (GARDP) and Richard Snyder for engaging in insightful dialogue about the anticipated gaps in available therapeutics for hospitals globally, where antimicrobial stewardship pharmacists will need to provide critical answers in the face of limited options. It’s clear the call for research, patient advocacy, and novel antibiotic development is more urgent than ever. Taking a vacation from work to connect with leaders and attend the 2nd day of the World Anti-Microbial Resistance Congress may seem extreme, but I don’t regret a single moment! AMR is the most deadly threat that no one has been taking about. Well, that seems to be changing; momentum is building. This past week, I attended and spoke at the World Anti-Microbial Resistance Congress about action and work of organizational like the AMR Industry Alliance and experienced the new AMR off-Broadway musical Lifeline the Musical. These important milestones in the lead-up the the #UNGA #HLM on Antimicrobial Resistance demonstrate that there are passionate advocates, brilliant researchers and committed companies still doing everything we can to slow AMR, and political action must follow. And at the same time, creative efforts like Lifeline are reaching the general public, which I hope will help put a face on the problem, create new advocates (like the amazing actors in the show), and spur more advocacy and action. It was a profound experience to be part of Day 2 at the World Anti-Microbial Resistance Congress & Disease Prevention & Control Summit 2024, joining the panel titled "From New Drug Developments to New Approaches: Tackling the Emerging Threat of Anti-Fungal Resistance." Moderated by Robert (Rob) Purdie, Founder and Managing Director of Mycology Advocacy, Research, and Education (MyCARE), the panel brought together experts including Dr Afreenish Amir, Medical Microbiologist from Rawalpindi Medical University, Dr Carol Munro , Professor at the University of Aberdeen, and myself Kinta Alexander, DrPH, CIC Director of Infection and Prevention NYC Health + Hospitals Harlem Engaging in this important dialogue, we explored innovative solutions to address the rising challenge of antifungal resistance.Thank you Mary Fornek for supporting the IP team from Harlem and your leadership. I had the pleasure of speaking at World Anti-Microbial Resistance Congress On Women's Health and AMR #antimicrobialresistance Women are more susceptible to AMR because of physiologic, social, economic and cultural factors. There are tremendous health disparities for women which put them at increased risk of AMR. ??delay in seeking health care ??barriers to seeking care (childcare/elder care/ transportation) ??risk factors during pregnancy and maternal mortality due to AMR and poor outcomes Biologically women are at increased risk of acquiring infections. Pregnancy, gestational diabetes, childbirth all contribute to the risk of acquiring infections. The physiological changes occurring in pregnant women increase their risk of developing AMR infections include hormonal changes, changes in gut microbiome and immunoregulatory changes. Additionally giving birth in settings lacking adequate WASH (water/sanitation/hygiene) standards puts women at risk. There are serious implications of AMR infections in pregnancy and worse outcomes for both mother and baby such as Sepsis, Preterm birth, Chorioamnionitis, Developmental delays and more. Interventions should start with EDUCATION ??Maternal education on AMR and threat to mother/baby ACCESS ??Access to health to promote healthcare maintenance ??Infection prevention AWARENESS ??Timely and appropriate treatment of infections to reduce risk of AMR ??Antimicrobial stewardship EQUITY ??reaching people where they are, using cultural and language specific approaches to empower communities with knowledge and access to health care PARTNERSHIP ??Global/National collaboration ??Advocate for legislation to combat AMR Sepsis Alliance Beth Battaglino HealthyWomen Pandemic Action Network Carolyn Reynolds Edie Stringfellow
