Today, the Meta Oversight Board released its decision that the phrase “from the river to the sea,” which calls to dismantle Israel, including through the removal of Jews from their ancestral homeland, should not be considered hate. We reject this short-sighted decision. ? "From the river to the sea” is an antisemitic charge denying the Jewish people's right to self-determination. This rallying cry, enshrined in the charter of Hamas, has long been used by anti-Israel voices, including supporters of terrorist orgs like Hamas & PFLP, which seek Israel’s destruction through violent means. ? It is a call for a Palestinian state extending from the Jordan River to the Mediterranean Sea, territory that includes the entirety of the State of Israel, which would mean the dismantling of the Jewish state. ? Usage of this phrase has the effect of making members of the Jewish and pro-Israel community feel unsafe and ostracized and we call on Meta to recognize the harm this phrase poses to Jewish communities worldwide. We reject the Oversight Board’s short-sighted decision. ? This decision continues the pattern of supreme indifference to online hate and harassment that has long been the hallmark of Meta’s operations. New?research?from the ADL Center for Tech & Society: major social media platforms are still not fully complying with California's 2022 bill requiring them?to be transparent about how they are fighting hate and harassment. With moves underway to make this bill national, it's important to remember that transparency is necessary for accountability.?More here:?https://lnkd.in/gjkVbcxb
