Last week at IEEE SPAWC 2024 in Lucca, Italy, I had the opportunity to present our paper titled “Active Beam Training with Hierarchical Codebooks in Two-Dimensional Phased Arrays” as part of the MSCA project ANTERRA: Antenna Systems Experts for 6G Non-Terrestrial Networks. It was a great experience to share our work on hierarchical beamforming codebooks for millimeter-wave communications in non-terrestrial networks. The workshop was delightful, with plenty of inspiring talks and engaging discussions with other researchers in the field. Special thanks to my co-authors and supervisors, Ulf Gustavsson and Hamdi Joudeh, for their invaluable contributions and support. Today we presented our work "Doppler Shift Estimation for Satellite Communications using Linear Estimators" at #SPAWC in the beautiful Lucca, Italy! In this paper, we develop a standalone estimation procedure to estimate Doppler shifts in Satellite-to-Ground transmissions using a series of Least Squares estimators with an increasing number of samples. Doppler shifts are an undesired effect that takes place in wireless signal transmission whenever there is relative movement between transmitter and receiver. In future communication generations, where low Earth orbit (LEO) satellites play a relevant role, such a phenomenon is expected to be strong with respect to satellites in higher altitudes, as LEO satellites travel at very high speeds. We initially study this problem and propose a simple signal model to develop a standalone multi-step Doppler estimation approach based on linear estimators. Simulation results show practically unbiased estimates with variances close to the Cramer-Rao lower bound even in low signal-to-noise ratio regimes, demonstrating the potential of this technique in future non-terrestrial network systems. I am very thankful for the support and great insights from my supervisors at Chalmers tekniska h?gskola and Ericsson, in the context of project ANTERRA: Antenna Systems Experts for 6G Non-Terrestrial Networks. I can't wait for the next developments in this field! Link to the paper: https://t.ly/Mqlsp

Happy to present our work "Phased Array Scan Performance Review for SATCOM: Dielectric Resonator vs. Patch Antennas" at IEEE APS/URSI 2024 Florence (IT). Our key findings include: 1. Increased scan range of wideband (>40%) arrays employing patch radiators compared to dielectric resonator antennas (DRAs) by using low permittivity materials. 2. Scan limitations in the DRA case are caused by the excitation of surface waves on the antenna surface, similar to arrays of patches or dipoles. 3. There exists a radiator profile-width trade-off in the DRA case; however, bandwidth and scan limitations remain almost constant. Many thanks to my coauthors and supervisors Artem Vilenskiy, Thomas Sch?fer, Marianna Ivashina, and Ahmed Kishk from Chalmers University of Technology and Satcube for their continued guidance and support. Also proud to aknowledge EU???? funding for this work as part of the ANTERRA: Antenna Systems Experts for 6G Non-Terrestrial Networks project. #PhasedArrays #SATCOM #ANTERRA

?? Excited to share the submission of our new conference paper as part of ANTERRA: Antenna Systems Experts for 6G Non-Terrestrial Networks intitled "Soft Handover Strategy in Low Earth Orbit Satellite Networks; how strong the inter-satellite link should be" conducted in collaboration with Alberto Tarable,Alessandro Nordio, and Behrooz Makki ??? Our paper focuses on the advantages of employing soft handover techniques, particularly in the uplink. We establish a realistic model for both ground-to-satellite and inter-satellite links. Key highlights of our findings include: 1- Quantification of the loss incurred by hard handover compared to soft handover through comprehensive simulations. 2- Evaluation of amplify-and-forward (AF) and decode-and-forward (DF) relaying techniques during handover, with a particular emphasis on block error rate (BLER). 3- Exploration of the impact of LEO constellation size on network BLER. 4- Revelation of the impact of misalignment on inter-satellite links, especially at optical frequencies, under soft handover scenarios. Our research sheds light on the crucial role soft handover plays in enhancing the performance and reliability of LEO satellite networks, offering valuable insights for future developments in the field.
