The HIFAR decommissioning team recently hosted a visit from our Board Chair Michael Quigley and CEO Shaun Jenkinson. After a decade of preparation, this project is both highly intricate and technical, with safety the primary focus at every stage. The initial phase entails dismantling the facility's peripheral plant, equipment, and the control room, leaving only the reactor block. According to the Project Lead, the success of this decommissioning project heavily relies on the expertise and commitment of a proficient team with deep knowledge of the HIFAR facility. Nuclear science and technology for the benefit of all Australians.
关于我们
ANSTO is one of Australia’s largest public research organisations and custodian of much of our country’s important science infrastructure, including the OPAL nuclear research reactor, the Australian Synchrotron, accelerators, cyclotrons and neutron beam instruments. More than 1000 scientists, engineers and experts work at ANSTO to answer the significant environmental, medical and industrial questions using nuclear techniques. ANSTO’s international collaborations, including partnerships with the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN), ensure Australian scientists are connected to a global network of experts and research projects. As part of enabling a strong national collaborative network, ANSTO is connected with all Australian and New Zealand universities through the Australian Institute of Nuclear Science and Engineering (AINSE), providing researchers access to Australia’s nuclear science, technology and engineering expertise and landmark infrastructure. On average, ANSTO accommodates over 1800 visiting researchers from other Australian and international research organisations each year. https://www.ansto.gov.au/social-media-terms-of-engagement

Over half a century ago, security at ANSTO, then the Australian Atomic Energy Commission, looked a little different. Captured by renowned Australian photographer Max Dupain circa the late 1960s, this control room was the nerve centre for site security, equipped with rotary dial phones, analog meters, and meticulous record-keeping. While technology has evolved, the commitment to safety remains the same. Today, ANSTO works closely with the Australian Federal Police to ensure the security of our people, research, and facilities because some responsibilities never change. #NuclearScience #AustralianHistory #ScienceAndTechnology #SecurityInnovation #STEMLeadership

Congratulations, Oksana, It's fantastic to see you selected as one of the 2025 Fullbright Australia scholarship recipients! What an amazing opportunity to complete a Master's in Nuclear Engineering in the US. We can't wait to see the impact you'll make!
Last week I got to attend the Fulbright Australia orientation as part of the 2025 cohort! Super inspiring to meet my fellow awardees from around Australia and the US. I’m very honoured to be part of this awesome and welcoming group. Thanks to Fulbright, I will be completing a masters of Nuclear Engineering in the U.S to further the nuclear industry in Australia. Can’t wait to see what we all get up to with this opportunity - let’s get the bread!

Nuclear Forensics: Finding evidence of the source and history of radioactive material At ANSTO, we have dedicated labs and a team of experts who have been building our nuclear forensics capability for almost 20 years. We partner with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to share this knowledge by hosting nuclear forensic training courses to participants from member countries across Southeast Asia. In this video, Kaitlyn, one of our nuclear scientists, explains how the work we do at ANSTO helps strengthen nuclear security in our region. ?? Spotlight on Maxine Roberts, Principal Radiochemist at ANSTO! ?? Maxine puts her radiochemistry skills to work, utilising ANSTO's facilities and infrastructure to do work that wouldn't otherwise be possible. Her team investigates nuclear isotopes, and when one in two Australians is expected to benefit from nuclear medicine in their lifetime, a career as a radiochemist can significantly improve community health. ?? Science meets art at the Australian Synchrotron. International artist Charles Brooks Photographer captured extraordinary images inside the main ring, showcasing the intricate details of an electron’s journey. Using a laparoscope adapted to a camera, Brooks highlights the cryogenic undulator. An advanced device that is essential for generating synchrotron light that supports cutting-edge research. In collaboration with accelerator physicist Eugene Tan, Brooks converted radio waves from inside the vacuum chamber into an audible sound, providing an unprecedented experience of electrons travelling at nearly the speed of light. ??
