Providing Kangaroo Care: an exceptionally simple and scientifically proven treatment to avert newborn deaths.
关于我们
Globally 2.4 million children died in the first month of life in 2020. India alone accounted for 22% of these newborn deaths. The leading risk factor for mortality among children under five years of age is Low Birth Weight, which is responsible for more than 80% of neonatal deaths. A simple solution holds the potential to significantly reduce these deaths: placing low birth weight infants directly onto the mother's chest for skin-to-skin contact, an intervention known as Kangaroo Care (KC). KC entails not only prolonged and continuous skin-to-skin contact but also exclusive breastfeeding and close monitoring of the infant. KC has proven to effectively reduce mortality and morbidity rates by around 33% (compared to the standard of care using electric incubators) by preventing hypothermia, fighting infections like sepsis, and helping the newborn gain weight through the caregiver’s heat. However, adoption barriers for Kangaroo Care in LMICs, such as India, persist. These include insufficient equipment, a shortage of human resources, and a lack of privacy within healthcare facilities. Many of our target healthcare facilities even lack the infrastructure for conventional standard of care (i.e., electric incubators), further amplifying the potential impact of Kangaroo Care in low-resource settings. Our approach is both direct and cost-effective: repurpose existing hospital spaces to facilitate KC, provide essential equipment like infant weighing scales and cloth binders, and expand capacity by training and hiring health workers (HW) dedicated to teaching and monitoring KC for mothers in the wards.

Successful Conclusion of Ansh's Kangaroo Mother Care Pilot Program in Pali & Baran, Rajasthan ?? We are delighted to announce the successful completion of Ansh's pilot program on Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC) in low-resource, high-burden district hospitals across Rajasthan. This program aimed to reduce neonatal mortality rates through the implementation of Kangaroo Care and other evidence-based interventions for low birth weight and premature newborns. The cornerstone of this success lies in the synergy between a meticulously researched and data-driven program strategy and the dedication of our exceptional implementation team. Key elements of the program included: 1) Skin-to-Skin Contact: Mothers and families were guided to do skin-to-skin for extended periods of time during their stay at the hospital and received in-depth counseling on the benefits of skin-to-skin contact (kangaroo care) for neonates. 2) Breastfeeding Support: Mothers and families were supported and encouraged to breastfeed 10-12 times a day during their stay at the hospital and were equipped with the knowledge and skills to practice exclusive breastfeeding, addressing challenges like low milk production and infant feeding difficulties. 3) Early Warning Signs Recognition: Training focused on identifying critical danger signs associated with neonatal mortality and appropriate responses to these situations. Additionally, our nurses identified and referred multiple babies exhibiting danger signs and ensured life-saving care was delivered to them on time. A Heartfelt Thank You to Our Team ?? We extend our sincere gratitude to the entire team who made this program a reality. This includes our implementation partners, the two dedicated on-ground M&E Coordinators who ensured meticulous data collection and monitoring, the two Program Managers who provided invaluable leadership, and the remarkable team of over 23 Nurses who delivered exceptional patient care. Their unwavering commitment from January to March 2024 was instrumental in the pilot's success. Promising Initial Results and Future Developments ?? We are thrilled to share that preliminary data analysis indicates neonatal mortality reduction. Stay tuned for the release of a detailed report in May, which will delve deeper into the program's impact on improving newborn mortality rates in these district hospitals. Given the positive outcomes of the pilot, Ansh has decided to continue the programs in both districts. We are currently fundraising to ensure these life-saving interventions can reach mothers and babies in our existing districts and more. Please reach out if you are interested! ??????
