Argonne National Laboratory will play a leading role in planning and rebuilding a nuclear-generated clean energy infrastructure for postwar Ukraine. This initiative is part of the lab’s focus on developing small modular reactor applications to help countries meet energy security goals. Los Alamos National Laboratory has conducted the first criticality safety experiment with HALEU fuel in over 20 years. The Deimos experiment at the National Criticality Experiments Research Center is paving the way for advanced reactor designs by providing vital safety and performance data for HALEU fuel. This work supports efforts by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and Nuclear Regulatory Commission to develop HALEU infrastructure crucial for advanced nuclear reactors. Great session to start off day two of #ANSWinter2024! With growing energy demands in the defense sector, it was inspiring to see officials from the White House, Army, Navy, and Air Force unite to discuss how nuclear can address these needs in the near future. Moderated by Rian Bahran, Ph.D., this panel featured Rachel Jacobson, Nancy J Balkus, and Walter "Wally" Ludwig, PE as they discussed nuclear energy's resilience against security threats and its role in providing clean, reliable power to military bases worldwide.
