Childcare challenges impact our entire community, from families to businesses. At Ann Arbor SPARK, we’re actively engaged in conversations with local leaders and partners to drive meaningful change on this critical issue. Together, we’re exploring new ways to support childcare access and affordability, helping to build a stronger foundation for Ann Arbor’s future.
In the past week, we've had a flurry of discussions about childcare in Ann Arbor, including at Tech Talk during IMPACT 2024 with the A2Y Chamber, and in conversations with our partners at the MEDC. Here’s some of what we’ve learned: The challenges: - Ann Arbor has the highest childcare cost in Michigan. - Many providers are driven by passion, often without the financial stability that should come with this vital work. - As a state, Michigan is missing out on nearly $3 billion each year due to inadequate childcare availability. The better news: - There’s increasing awareness about this issue, and the conversation is reaching places where childcare hasn’t typically been a priority. - Businesses are stepping up as champions on this issue. We’re learning from organizations in Colorado and beyond about how employers can make targeted investments in childcare, directly impacting their ability to hire and expand their workforce. - We’re working to streamline processes so providers can more easily locate or expand at the municipal level. A special thank you to those making space for this important discussion: Nikki Gusz for leading our outreach efforts, Andy LaBarre at the Chamber for championing the cause, Thressa Nichols, Amanda Lewan, Peter Lindeman, Paula Holtz, EDFP, Emma from Lansing, and my coalition partners including Cheranissa Williams, M.S.A., Annette Sobocinski, Etta Heisler, Deata McLemore and more.
