The Division of Ophthalmology at Lurie Children's is the first in Illinois to become a surgical site for LUXTURNA?, the first gene therapy approved in the U.S. to treat patients with a form of vision loss that can result in blindness. Patients insured by Medicaid are less likely to get prenatal diagnosis of heart defects than those with private insurance, and this disparity can be partly attributed to lower rates of 20-week ultrasound in pregnant people with public insurance, according to a study led by Lurie Children's and Stanley Manne Children's Research Institute in collaboration with Advocate Christ Children’s Hospital. The study was published in the journal?Prenatal Diagnosis. “The 20-week ultrasound is hugely important in detecting birth defects because it involves assessment of the baby’s major organs. In honor of World Marrow Donor Day, we celebrate the power of a stranger’s lifesaving gift! At 13-years-old, Ruben, now 27, was diagnosed with leukemia. After going into remission, the blood cancer returned and that’s when doctors shared with Ruben and his family that a bone marrow transplant would be his best chance at survival. Ruben matched with an unrelated donor, Emmy, more than 3,000 miles away from his Chicago home and received his stem cell transplant at Lurie Children's Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders in 2015. Emmy and Ruben have been bonded ever since and in January 2017 met for the first time. This summer, Ruben traveled with his family to Colorado to attend Emmy’s wedding. “She's always going to be a part of my life,” says Ruben.
