Scientists from?Stanley Manne Children's Research Institute at Ann?&?Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago and Northwestern University succeeded in regenerating fully functional urinary bladder tissue in a long-term study utilizing a non-human primate model. This unique model initially created by the?Sharma (Arun) Laboratory?explores long term bladder tissue regeneration at both anatomical and physiological levels. “It’s a winning combination of features,” says Sharma. “By using the patient's own cells, we effectively eliminate the risk of graft rejection, and the stem cell combination is potently synergistic and actively contributes to driving definitive bladder tissue regeneration.” Read more from Nature Portfolio https://lnkd.in/db5868-R.

Today, we recognized NRG Energy's incredible support. Through its Choose to Give charitable program, NRG surpassed $6 million in contributions to the hospital. To celebrate the milestone, a dedication ceremony will be held for the hospital’s emergency department waiting area. NRG’s Choose to Give program launched at Lurie Children’s in 2017, and contributions support the hospital’s Access for Every Child fund to ease families’ financial burdens so they can focus on what is truly important—their child’s health. Since 2017, NRG’s Choose to Give program has empowered customers to support local nonprofits simply through paying their electricity bills. To date, NRG and its customers have contributed more than $20 million to local organizations across the country through the program. Customers interested in learning more about the NRG electricity plan benefiting Lurie Children’s Hospital, or to enroll, can visit picknrg.com/lurie.

Born at 28 weeks, Chiemerie was diagnosed with bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD), the most common complication of prematurity. BPD severely affects 20% of infants born under 1kg. Babies like Chiemerie require a significant amount of support, including ventilation and feeding assistance, and may have cardiac consequences from their lung disease. Fortunately, Chiemerie was brought to Lurie Children’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) where she received expert care from our multidisciplinary team in Lurie Children's Bronchopulmonary Dysplasia Program. Each year, our team cares for 40 to 50 babies with BPD. Chiemerie was given a tracheostomy and placed on a ventilator to support her breathing and provide a stable airway. Today, Chiemerie is an active four-year-old. Her mother recently shared, “She has an amazing team of doctors at [Lurie Children’s] who did more than being doctors - they went above and beyond for our ChiChi (as we all fondly call her). Chiemerie is now off the ventilator, walking and talking. She still sees the ENT and GI team and is in the process of getting decannulated [removing her tracheostomy tube]. Chiemerie loves books, puzzles, dance and of course TV!” To learn more about BPD and the care Chiemerie received at Lurie Children's, watch https://lnkd.in/ghcmNWbG. #NICU #bpdawareness
