Summer might be coming to its end, but not before Paralympians take the stage in Paris. The Lurie Children’s community is excited to cheer on former patient and paralympic medalist Kendall Gretsch in the para triathlon! Born with spina bifida, Kendall was a patient of the Lurie Children’s Spina Bifida Clinic, which treats patients from before birth into adulthood. Kendall was a natural athlete as a kid and began competing in para triathlons in college, quickly succeeding in the sport and excelling in international competitions. As a multisport athlete, Kendall has taken home Paralympic medals in the para biathlon, para cross-country skiing and the para triathlon. “I encourage other patients to try out lots of different activities to find out what they are passionate about,” Kendall said. “Competing in sports has brought me so much joy by allowing me to travel the world and connect with so many different people.” Help Lurie Children’s wish Kendall good luck in the Paralympic Para Triathlon! A new?report on cystic fibrosis?(CF) from Ann?&?Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago, in partnership with the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), highlights the need to improve awareness and practice to ensure that all babies with CF are diagnosed as soon as possible. Remarkable improvements in cancer survivorship have prompted increased awareness of long-term quality of life concerns, including the risk of infertility among adult survivors of childhood cancer. Pediatric and adolescent patients at risk of losing their fertility due to medical conditions and treatments have more options than ever before to preserve their fertility for the future. The Fertility & Hormone Preservation & Restoration program at Lurie Children’s is the only one of its kind for pediatric patients in the state of Illinois. Happy National Dog Day! We can’t think of a better way to celebrate today than to introduce you to Hawk, a 15-month-old, Golden Retriever and Lurie Children’s first facility dog! Hawk is part of our NutriSource Facility Dog Program and is a full-time employee, working 40 hours a week M-F alongside his Certified Child Life Specialist Handler, Natalie. Child Life Specialists help patients cope with the stressors of being hospitalized by elevating their emotional safety needs. Facility dogs like Hawk are raised to help support interventions led by Lurie Children’s Child Life Specialists. These dogs help patients and their families cope with challenging medical situations, procedures and overcome stress that they may experience during a hospital stay. Facility dogs are specifically trained and are an intentional part of the child life team with very specific intervention and coping plans. Hawk is already busy engaging in child life interventions and helping to elevate emotional safety needs of our patients and families as well as staff. We are especially grateful to our Facility Dog Program supporters: NutriSource Pet Foods, Dunkin' Joy In Childhood Foundation and Fred Says We are PAWsitively thrilled to welcome Hawk to our Lurie Children’s community! Lurie Children’s will also continue its long-standing partnership with Rainbow Animal Assisted Therapy.
